Halsey (Hal) Ewing Werlein, 88, born on August 5, 1937, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on January 8, 2026, at home in Chattanooga. He graduated from Sewanee University of the South, class of 1958, and went on to Columbia University in New York City for graduate studies and earned a Doctor of Education at MTSU. He was a dedicated professor of English Literature and French at Motlow State Community College for many years before retiring to Southern Greece in 2015. His passion for education profoundly impacted countless students over the course of his career.
He was a loving husband to his wife, Linda Jackim Werlein and a devoted father to his children, Halsey Werlein, Ashley Wood, and Amanda Werlein. He was a proud grandfather of four grandchildren.
Halsey was preceded in death by his parents Phillip Werlein, Virginia Pearson, and his sisters Virginia Leila Geck, Helen Louise Richardson, Phyllis Elizabeth Budd.
His family will forever remember him for his unwavering love and support throughout their lives.
