Hang Chun Leung

In Loving Memory of
Hang Chun Leung,, 86, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully on April 16th, 2025. Hang Chun, the only son of Lam Leung and Kam Ngo Tong, was born in Tong Ga Wan (Tong Family Bay), Chung Shan in Canton province. The Leungs and the Tongs owned oyster farms for centuries. Due to the war, Hang Chun left the village and moved to Macau at age 11 to continue his education and to flee from the Communists and the Japanese invasion. Fellow villagers took care of him. Eventually, he moved to Hong Kong to finish his secondary school education at All Saints Middle School where he met his high school sweetheart, Ling Sen Mui Leung,, whom he married in 1963, at the age of 24.
After secondary school, Hang Chun obtained his Teachers Certificate from Northcote College of Education in 1964 in Hong Kong. He had always dreamt of attending university, but due to familial obligations, he could only complete his B.A. (Hons.) Chinese from London University in 1970 via correspondence. His love of knowledge led Hang Chun to continue his studies and became an Incorporated Linguist from the Institute of Linguist in London in 1982. He received his Diploma in Education from London University in 1984. In 1994, Hang Chun, his wife and the rest of the family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area due to the return of Hong Kong to Communist China. In San Francisco, he completed his M.A. in Chinese from San Francisco State University in 1999, at the age of 61.
As an educator, teacher, linguist, and philosopher, Hang Chun taught Chinese, Chinese History, Chinese Literature, English and P.E. for 40 years, both in Hong Kong and San Francisco. He also served as counselor and mentor to his many hundreds of students. He was well loved as Leung Sir or Mr. Leung to his students. And amongst his many friends, they called him a gentleman.
To his family, Hang Chun was the patriarch. A principled and loving father who guided the family with conviction, deep beliefs and the utmost care and love. He instilled in his children the importance of family, education, music and the love of language and philosophy.
Hang Chun is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Ling Sen, eldest daughter, Winnie Wing Yee Froomin, and her husband, Marty Froomin, eldest son, Toby Sing Fai Leung, and his wife, Mandy Lam, youngest son, Sydney Si Ning Leung, and his husband, Mark J. Barrenechea, youngest daughter, Sylvia Sau Wai Leung, and her husband, Raymond Lee. His treasured grandchildren, Carmen Wong, and their wife, Dee Castle, Eva Leung, Louis Leung, Kate Lee and Michael Lee. His sister, Hang Lin Leung and her children, Sumi, Noel and Amy. His brother, Hang Wing Leung and his son, Ka Chun.
Hang Chuns funeral service will be held on May 25th, 2025 at 10:00am at Grant Miller-John Cox Mortuary, 2850 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, CA, USA. His burial service will be held at Rolling Hills Memorial Park, 4100 Hilltop Drive, Richmond, CA, USA at 1:00pm.
Hang Chuns family and his students are setting up a scholarship in Hang Chuns memory for students achieving excellence in the Chinese language at Jockey Club Government Secondary School in Hong Kong where he taught for almost twenty years. This scholarship will continue Hang Chuns vision and belief that education is one of the keys to unlocking the meaning of life.
