Harold Thomas "Tom" Canning, age 65, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on February 20, 2025, at his home in DeBary, Florida.
Tom was born on March 1, 1959, in a U.S. Army hospital in Augsburg, Germany, to his mother, Ingeborg Canning (neé Mayrle), and the late Donald Canning. In 1961, his family moved to the United States, where he spent his childhood in various small towns across New York, including Greenwich. Of all the places he lived, it was Saranac Lake that captured his heart, and he carried his love for the mountains and lakes of the Adirondacks with him throughout his life.
A proud graduate of Saranac Lake Central High School, Class of 1977, Tom went on to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps as an air traffic controller. His service took him from North Carolina to California, and during that time, he married Rosanne Buck and began building a family he adored.
After leaving the military, Tom moved to Central Florida, where he spent the last 40+ years of his life. There, he found new waters to explore. Whether fishing the local lakes, relaxing at Gemini Springs, or venturing out to the ocean, he was happiest outdoors, surrounded by nature. Tom had a soft spot for small dogs and loved his pets dearly, including Frankie the Chihuahua and Freida the Jack Russell Terrier, along with his feathered friends a lovebird and a parakeet who brought him joy.
Above all else, Tom's family was his greatest pride. He is survived by his loving mother, Ingeborg, and his siblings: Joanne (Tom) Morrhead of NJ, Dale "Bob"(Anne) Canning of NY, Donald Canning of NY, Barbara (Nos) Luangratkhamkeo of FL, Karen (Nikk) Keoheungpraseuth of FL, Robert Aldrich of NY and FL, Bonnie Canning of NY, Tammy (Felix) Rivera of FL, and Shawn (Kari) Canning of FL.
Tom leaves behind his children: Shawn (Jeanine) French of NY, Aaron Canning of FL, Kara Canning of FL, and Michael Canning of FL. He was a proud grandfather to Heather, Seana, Gauge, Emma, Ava, Leon, and Mariah, and a great-grandfather to ten great-grandchildren with one more on the way any day now.
He also leaves behind several beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews who will deeply miss him.
He is reunited in peace with his father, Donald Canning; his stepmother, Lois Canning; and his beloved sons, Raymond Suarez and Nicholas Canning.
Tom will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his quiet strength, and his deep love for his family. His stories, his laughter, and his kindness will echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
"Du bleibst für immer in unseren Herzen"
(You will forever be in our hearts)
