The following was lovingly written by Harold's family...
Harold Ray Congdon left his earthly body on
Thursday, December 14, 2023
and his soul and spirit went to his Heavenly
home to dwell with
his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ forever.
Harold was born on February 15, 1927
to Jay Dodge and Ambie Goss
in the small town of
Covington, Oklahoma.
The family later moved to Marshall, Oklahoma
where Harold attended school.
Harold enlisted in the United States Navy on
February 01, 1945 and began his
basic training on March 09, 1945.
He was assigned to the 39th Navy Seabees
and immediately shipped overseas
into the Pacific theater of World War II.
The 39th became the 31st Special Seabees,
which later became the 1st Special Seabees.
Harold was stationed on Saipan
until the end of the war
and his outfit was one of the first into
Japan to serve in the occupation forces.
He attained the rank of Shipfitter Third Class
(welder) in the Seabees.
He received the Victory Medal,
Good Conduct Medal,
and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.
He received an honorable discharge from the
Navy on March 24, 1946.
In September of 1946, Harold
joined the U. S. Naval Reserves
and served until September 1951.
Harold completed his education after
returning from the service in the Navy
and graduated in 1947
from Marshall High School.
Harold lived most of his life in Enid, Oklahoma
where he raised his family.
He married Zilpha "Zee" Adams.
had five children: Linda, Harry, Mike,
Janice, and Mary.
He first worked for his father-in-law, Harry Adams,
and later went into business for himself with
Harold's Welding Service,
mostly in the oil fields of Oklahoma.
In 1982, Harold and his second wife, Jo Ann,
moved to the Terlton, Oklahoma area
in semi-retirement.
He drove a school bus for the town
of Cleveland for 10 years.
Harold was passionate about
many things throughout his life.
He was a member of the
VFW Post in
Mannford, Oklahomaand served with the
5th District Rifle Squad Honor Guard
to perform funeral services for veterans.
He assisted with 1,652 Military Services.
He was also a member of the
Lakeview Christian Church,
the Keystone Crossroads Historical Society,
and Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA),
a motorcycle organization.
He and his third wife, Virginia,
traveled throughout the United States and Canada
on their Honda Gold Wing motorcycle.
Of all the things Harold loved,
he loved his family the most.
Harold was a wonderful and amazing man.
He will be missed.
Harold is survived by two sisters,
Letha Clarke of Southerland Virgina
and Joyce Brock of Streetman Texas;
son, Mike Congdon and wife Robyn of Crescent;
daughter, Mary McCoy and husband Tim of Enid;
daughter-in-law, Kathy Congdon of Enid:
grandchildren, Jason, Jamie, Jeff, Jennifer,
Jeremy, Curtis and Lucas;
sixteen great-grandchildren
and five great-great grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held 11:00 am
Saturday, January 6th 2024
at Lakeview Christian Church in Mannford Oklahoma
with Pastors Jeff Congdon and
Jeremy Congdon officiating.
