Harold Lee Helm, age 87, of Rochelle, IL passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026. He was born on March 9, 1939, in Marion County, Illinois, the son of Ruffie and Ruby (Haizlip) Helm. Harold married Bettie Shuler on July 6, 1985 in Salem, IL.
Before retiring, Harold worked as a welder—a career that suited his remarkable skill with his hands and his knack for building and fixing just about anything. Harold was a self-taught musician who learned to play and sing by ear. He loved playing the guitar and harmonica and especially enjoyed singing with his brothers. His passions also included golfing, bird watching, and fishing.
Harold will be remembered for his laughter, quick wit, and the joy he brought to everyone around him. A jokester at heart, he loved spending time with his family and friends more than anything.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Bettie, and his children: Diane (Ralph) Vest, Sandy (Mike) Baker, Daphne Urbanski, stepdaughter Krisi (Pat) Kranz, and step son Kurt Shuler. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren: Heather (Brad) Stephenson, Melanie Brookman, Ashley (Dustin) Rightnower, Casey (Clint) Rhine, Thadius Urbanski, Desiree Pursley, Clinton (Kaitlin) Shuler, Jennifer (Josh) Pettorini, and Brooke (Matt) Duffy; by 18 Great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Harold is further survived by his brothers Don (Pat) Helm, John (Carolann) Helm, Bob (Katie) Helm, and Mike (Carol) Helm; sisters Betty Bumgardner, Linda Albert, Lois (Don) Wallace, and Norma (Bob) Jourdan; sister-in-law Connie Henert; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Neil Henert, son-in-law Frank Urbanski, and grandson Joshua Baker.
Harold’s family and friends will forever remember his generous spirit, humor, and love of life. His legacy lives on in the laughter, songs, and memories he shared with those he loved.
Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M. on Monday, March 23, 2026 at the Faith Lutheran Church. Funeral service will follow on Monday at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Joy Alsop officiating. Cremation care follows services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a memorial to be determined at a later date. Guest book at www.UngerHorner.com
