Harold Maixner Obituary

Captain Harold Maixner, USN (Ret.), died in Virginia Beach, VA, on September 28, 2023 following a brief illness, one day after his 79th birthday.

The son of a career Army officer, Harry traveled the world, eventually following his father into the military, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966. Harry excelled as a surface warfare officer, with a total of 7 assignments on destroyers, culminating in command of USS SCOTT (DDG-995) and USS CONOLLY (DD-979). Harry was an acknowledged ship handler and patiently imbued his warfighting skills in his men and officers, earning their enduring respect.

Harry received a Master of Science in Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School, and was a distinguished graduate of the Naval Warfare College, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security. Shore duty included assignments in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Naval Sea Systems Command where he headed the Advanced Combat Systems Architecture Branch. Prior to his retirement in 1995, he was assigned as Project Manager, NATO Seasparrow Project Support Office in Arlington, VA.

He was awarded the Legion of Merit, two awards each of the Meritorious Service and the Navy Commendation Medals, and numerous personal awards and campaign medals and ribbons.

Following retirement from the Navy, Harry worked with Systems Planning and Analysis in Alexandria, VA and with Northrup Grumman Aerospace Systems in Goleta, CA, retiring in 2010.

Harry was predeceased by his beautiful wife of 30 years, Judith Carole (Carrico) in 2000; he is survived by their daughter, Kristen Judith and her husband Tom Fairfax, a Master Deputy Sheriff and their four children in Culpeper, VA. His last three years were spent happily married to Bonne Brown in Virginia Beach, VA.

A celebration of life will be conducted at Old Donation Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach, VA, on October 10, 2023, with interment at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with his first love, Judith Carole. Bonne, Kristen, their families, and his many friends may rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live.

Rest In Peace Captain,

Fair Winds & Following Seas, Your Watch is over, Your shipmates have the watch now.
The number of once young men you had an impact on in a positive way is unknown; I was one of those young men, now older, and better able to reflect on earlier lessons, my success in life in no small part was due to You Sir.

You were my 1st Captain, and also a friend, I will miss you for a while; until we are on watch together again in Heaven.
