Harold Nims Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rutherford Funeral Home at Powell on Mar. 30, 2026.
Harold Elmer Nims Jr., 102, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026.

He was born on January 20, 1924 in Newton Falls, Ohio. He was the fourth of nine children born to Harold Edward Nims and Lila Mae Shepard. He was the second oldest son of seven boys. He is preceded in death by his siblings. His wife of 76 years, Elizabeth Rose Karl Nims, passed away in May 2025. He is also preceded in death by his son, Ronald Karl Nims.

Harold enjoyed life and relished chatting with people. He could start up a conversation with a stranger or friend just as easily. He really enjoyed being a centenarian, marveling at how he reached such an advanced age and enjoying its perks. He was renowned for sharing his candy stash and was always handing out treats.

He was a proud World War II veteran, achieving the rank of sergeant. He graduated from Kent State University with a degree in accounting. He was very proud that he was able to send his four children college. They all graduated from The Ohio State University. Harold would boast about their degrees and was always happy to share his children's academic accomplishments.

He was an Ohio State fan and attended the games for years. At 95, he did interval training to make himself strong enough to attend his last game in person. He kept active and went to the gym every day up to the end.

Harold was an avid golfer. He once succeeded in hitting a hole in one and hoped to repeat that achievement. He also loved playing bridge with his wife, Betty. He loved playing card games of all kinds. He particularly enjoyed playing cards with his granddaughters and when he could, he would find a cribbage partner.

He is survived by Douglas (Liz) Nims of Toledo, Nanci (Scott) Thornberry of East Liverpool, Ohio, Lori (Mike Thrush) Nims of Auckland, New Zealand; seven grandchildren (Nichole Caldwell, Natalie Hylton, Jay Nims, Bill Thornberry, Dan Thornberry, Megan Nims and Chelsea List); seven great-grandchildren (Mackenzie, Camille, Kayleigh and Corinne Caldwell; Isabelle and Lily Hylton; Margaret Elizabeth Nims-Leavy); and daughter-in-law Elaine Beed of Powell.

Harold always said he did not want flowers at his funeral, instead he wanted them while he was alive, his daughters ensured he got them. In lieu of flowers, play cards with family and friends or share a meal. He had a dram of whiskey every day but only in company. He would be delighted if you raised a dram to him in his memory.

Harold will have a brief visitation from 2 – 3 pm on April 11, 2026 at Rutherford Funeral Home at Powell. There will be a Remembrance Service at 3 pm.
