Harold L. Shaffer, 82, of Venice, Florida, formerly of Harpers Ferry,West Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family under the care of Tidewell Hospice House in Port Charlotte, Florida on Friday, July 15, 2022.
Harold was born on May 18,1940 in Brunswick, Maryland, to the late Marybelle V. Devine Hollis and the late John E. Shaffer.
He graduated from Harpers Ferry High School, Class of 1958. He entered the US Navy for 4 years and was stationed in the Persian Gulf on the USS Chewaucan.
Harold was a Property Assessor with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission in Laurel, Maryland and retired in 1999 after 32 years.
Harold was a devout Christian and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Harpers Ferry, WV, and a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice, Florida.
Harold was an avid sports fan. He played both fastpitch and slowpitch softball. He loved to follow the West Virginia Mountaineers football team and he was also an avid Tampa Bay Rays and Buccaneers fan.
On April 11, 1962 he married the love of his life, Phoebe Anne Hough, who predeceased him on October 2, 1992 after a 17 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Harold was her loving and devoted caregiver.
Harold is survived by his two loving daughters, Anne Christine (Roger) Wood and Rebecca Lynn (Craig) Pogue, both of Port Charlotte, Florida, and loving granddaughter, Kristen Nicole Wood of Ranson, WV. Harold also leaves behind his beloved cat, Cali.
A family-only graveside service will be held at Harper's Cemetery.
The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: Tidewell Foundation, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34238-9988 in memory of Harold L. Shaffer.
