Harold Thompson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by VanInwegen-Kenny Inc Funeral Home - Wurtsboro on Feb. 13, 2025.
Harold C. Thompson, a longtime member of the Wurtsboro community, and retired plant Superintendent of the former Mid Orange correctional facility, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service and devotion. Born and raised in the Village of Wurtsboro, Harold was the beloved son of the late Harold B. and Blanche (Helm) Thompson. He took immense pride in his deep family roots, tracing back to the original settlers of the Mamakating Valley.
A graduate of Monticello High School, class of 1955, Harold enlisted in the United States Army shortly after graduation. Upon completing his service, he returned home to Wurtsboro, where he married his high school sweetheart, the late Mary (McCormick) Thompson. Together, they built a life filled with love, raising two children in their beloved community.
Harold dedicated his life to serving others. He was a life active member and Honorary Chief of the Wurtsboro Fire Company #1, holding various offices, including Chief, Assistant Chief, President, Vice President, and Treasurer. His commitment extended to serving as a Fire Commissioner, contributing significantly to public safety. Beyond his fire service, Harold was a former trustee of the Wurtsboro Village board and a former chairman of the zoning board of appeals. He was deeply involved in preserving the community's heritage as a longtime member and former president of the Sylvan Cemetery Association and the Mamakating Conservation Club.
Harold is survived by his loving daughter, Kathleen (Larry) Pilecki of West Seneca, NY, and his dedicated son, James Thompson of Wurtsboro. He was a proud grandfather to two grandsons, Kyle (Taylor) Pilecki of Syracuse, NY, and Scott (Amelia) Pilecki of Albany, NY. He also leaves behind four nieces and nephews, including Dawn (Perry) Vittielo of Westbrookville, NY, who shared a special relationship with him, as well as several close friends and neighbors who visited with him frequently. In addition to his wife and parents, Harold was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Thompson and Francis (Robert) Olcott.
Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance on Tuesday, February 18 at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro from 6 pm to 9 pm. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 19 at 11 am. Interment of his ashes will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family at the Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Harold's memory may be made to the Wurtsboro Fire Company #1 54 Pine St, Wurtsboro, NY 12790 or to the Sylvan Cemetery Association, PO Box 283, Wurtsboro, NY 12790, honoring his enduring commitment to the community he loved so dearly.
