Harold Lloyd Vaught, a cherished patriarch, community pillar, and decorated war veteran, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025, in Ripplemead, Virginia, at the venerable age of 93. Born on September 21, 1931, in Goodwins Ferry, Harold's life journey was one marked by dedication and an unwavering spirit of enterprise.
Harold's formative years in Goodwins Ferry instilled in him a strong work ethic and a profound sense of responsibility, virtues that would guide him throughout his life. He bravely served his country as a Sergeant in the US Army during the Korean War, a period that showcased his commitment and courage. Following his military service, Harold continued to make his mark on the world as a Supervisor at Virginia Lime and later with Vaught Septic Service.
Harold was the beloved husband of JoAnn Thompson Vaught, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his sons, Donald Vaught (Angela) and Michael Vaught (Lynne). Harold's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Audessa Vaught (Angelo Said), Dr. Louis Oren Vaught, Danielle Koehler (Kyle), and Kelsey Vaught (Andrew Strickland), who will carry forward his values and wisdom. His life was also enriched by the presence of his siblings Thelma Albert, Wanda Price, Marvin Vaught, and Bryant Vaught, all of whom predeceased him, along with his parents, Orren and Ivory Smith Vaught.
Beyond his professional and familial achievements, Harold's passions painted the canvas of his life with vibrant colors. He took immense pride in the beautiful home he built on Smith Mountain Lake, a testament to his craftsmanship and love for serene landscapes. An avid traveler, Harold often found joy in visiting Pigeon Forge, where the allure of Hot Rods sparked his enthusiasm. His adventurous spirit led him to enjoy many memorable journeys with his family. Harold's love for the water was a constant throughout his life, manifesting in countless days spent on the lake, where he found solace and happiness. He also enjoyed camping which allowed him to connect with nature and provided a backdrop for quality time with those he loved.
