Harry Meeks

Harry L. Meeks Jr., 83, of Vincennes, IN passed April 19, 2025. He was born in Staunton, VA on January 25, 1942, to the late Harry and Evelyn Meeks. Harry served in the United States Navy prior to attending Virginia Tech where he graduated with a master's degree. He married the love of his life, Martha, on May 20, 1978, and they were blessed with two daughters, Molly and Melanie. Harry loved being a "girl dad" and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed NASCAR & USAC racing, where he met his best friend of over 40 years, Harold Stott of Tryon, NC.

Harry's career began in Danville, VA in 1973 as a basketball coach for a military prep school. He continued his career in basketball leading an Alabama high school boys' team for three years before he arrived at Vincennes University. Harry took over as women's basketball coach before the 1991-92 season. The following year, he led VU to its best record ever, 32-2, and a fifth-place finish in the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament. Another highlight of his VU tenure was the 1997-98 team reeling off 29 consecutive wins to start the season. While serving his tenure with VU, Harry became the most decorated basketball coach in school history, achieving his 707th career win in 2021. Harry was inducted into the NJCAA Women's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2020. However, Harry's drive and commitment to his student athletes didn't stop at the court. He was an advocate for success and helped take the rate of student graduation from 67 percent to 92 percent. Harry was truly a force for good and has changed the lives of so many students by teaching them the importance of commitment and perseverance. Harry will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Harry is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Evelyn Meeks and wife Martha Meeks.

He is survived by his daughters Molly (Jim) Lee and Melanie Meeks; grandsons Lincoln Lee, Sadler Meeks, Walter Lee; siblings Delores Diehl, Michael Meeks, Don Meeks; best friend Harold Stott; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Goodwin-Sievers is honored to be entrusted with the care of Harry. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 11 am-3 pm followed by funeral service at 3 pm at 524 Broadway Street with Pastor Pete White officiating.
