Harvey Phillips Newcomb, age 86, of Swampscott, died on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Patricia A. (Henry) Newcomb with whom he shared over 47 years of marriage and predeceased him in 2010. Born in Lynn in 1939, he was the son of the late Harvey and Priscilla (Odiorne) Newcomb. He was raised in Swampscott and graduated from Proctor Academy in Andover, NH. He later went on to receive his Associate's Degree from Leicester Junior College (now Becker College). Harvey worked as a manager at Vinnin True Value Hardware for many years and had previously worked as a jeweler at Kettel, Blake and Read in Boston, in advertising at Frost Advertising with his father, and at Keiver-Williard Lumber Corporation in Newburyport. He was a longtime member of the Swampscott Yacht Club and enjoyed spending time on his beloved boat Papa's Dream. He was a member of the Masons Philanthropic Lodge F. & A.M., Marblehead and was a talented handyman that could fix anything.
Harvey loved his family deeply and would never hesitate to drop everything to help at any time day or night! He had a great love of the ocean and loved to tell stories about his time growing up, and spending summers living on the family boat The Swirl in Marblehead Harbor, traveling up the Annisquam River, and swimming at the Corinthian. Later, he enjoyed spending time on the Little Swirl and then Papa's Dream with his family. He was proud of his family history and connections with the Phillips family at home in Swampscott, and the Odiorne family in Rye, NH. He loved following all of the things going on around town, and would often stop to talk to Police Officers, Firefighters and DPW to get the latest scoop. For many years he enjoyed helping the community and getting to know his regulars at the local hardware store, Vinnin True Value. For decades, he and his wife Pat were also well known for their love of dogs, and their in-home dog boarding where they cared for and spoiled pets from all over town. After his retirement, Harvey continued lively engagement in the community as a member of the Swampscott Yacht Club, where he could often be found in his regular spot sharing a story, a drink, a view, or an easy silence with good company.
Harvey is survived by his loving daughters, Carol McEnaney of Swampscott and Joyce Austin and her husband Jon of Swampscott; his adoring grandchildren, Caroline Miller and her fiancé Nick Therrien of Loveland, CO, Thomas McEnaney of Swampscott, and Brendan McEnaney of Los Angeles, CA, and his nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends, including his dear cousin Gail MacGregor. He was the brother of the late Janice Tanguay and Cynthia Smith.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday October 17, 2025 at 11a.m. in the SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 67 Ocean St. (Rt. 1A), Lynn. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery, Swampscott.
