Haskell (Hal) Hubert Shelton, 84, passed away on August 1, 2025, in Midland, Michigan.

Born on June 5, 1941, Hal graduated from Austin High School in El Paso, Texas, and went on to earn his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Texas in Austin. He pursued a distinguished career in law, serving in various capacities including Assistant U.S. Prosecuting Attorney and as a member of the U.S. Strike Force on Organized Crime. His legal journey also led him to roles with Ford Motor Company, Dow Chemical, and private practice where he specialized in toxic tort litigation.

Hal shared 63 devoted years of marriage with his wife, Joy. He was a proud father to three children: Merci Danielson, Liberty (Dale) Hoberman, and Haskell Shelton III. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Noah (Dani) Danielson, Elia (Evan) Meekhoff, Josh Danielson, Grace Danielson, Josie Hoberman, Gabe Hoberman, Bella Hoberman, and Camden Shelton.

He is also remembered by his sister Marti (Eddie) Horn; five nephews, one niece and his life long friend Oscar (Bea) Levy who was truly a brother. He was preceded in death by his parents, Beth Judkins Shelton and Haskell "Duke" Shelton, as well as his sister Carol Monson.

Outside of his professional life, Hal was an avid reader who especially enjoyed the westerns of Louis L'Amour. In retirement, he transitioned from reader to writer and authored five books. The genres ranged from fantasy to legal and western. He also dabbled in collecting antiques and selling them on eBay. A lifelong Cowboys fan, he rarely missed a game. He also cherished Tigers' spring training trips to Florida with his son. He owned several businesses during his time in Midland and took great satisfaction in restoring old homes. He and Joy treasured the time and memories with family at the cabins they owned together.

We are celebrating his homecoming in heaven as he went to be with the Lord. We ask anyone considering a memorial to donate to Midland Young Life. A family gathering will be held at a later date to honor his life and memory.
