Hathaway Goldthwaite Anderson, better known as Happy Anderson, died at age 91, on November 12, 2025. She died at Harbourway Assisted Living in Virginia Beach.
She was comforted in her last week, by her son, Bob, Daughter-in-Law, Donna and Granddaughter, Christy. In addition, she was supported by Larry Conner, a Chaplain and other staff from Suncrest Hospice; volunteers, staff and friends from Galilee Episcopal Church; and the staff at Harbourway Assisted Living. She was very appreciative of the years of daily phone calls and frequent visits from her very good friend, Paula Pechan. She often called Paula an "Angel." Michelli Booker, from the Galilee Choir, sang many comforting hymns to her in her final week. She was well supplied with many beautiful floral arrangements from her son, Bill, for many years.
She had been a resident of Virginia Beach for most of the prior 40 years. She was born August 27, 1934, in Montgomery, AL. She was the only child of VADM Robert Goldthwaite and Hathaway Crenshaw Goldthwaite, both of Montgomery, AL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Captain Forrest P. Anderson (USN, Ret.) of Memphis, TN. They were married on September 17, 1954, in Montgomery, AL. She is survived by her children, Robert G. "Bob" Anderson (Donna) of Salisbury, Elizabeth P. "Libby" Anderson (Joe Mahon) of Lisbon, Portugal and William K. "Bill" Anderson of Asheville, NC. She had two grandchildren: Robert G. "Rob" Anderson, Jr (Tori) of Salisbury and Christine E. "Christy" Hallman (Steve) of Salisbury. She had seven great-grandchildren: Brooke, Ellie, Will and Seth Anderson as well as Brinley, Charlotte and Sawyer Hallman.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother (known as Grammy). She traveled to many parts of the world while her husband was in the Navy. She continued to travel, mostly to England and Italy, after her husband retired. She was very fond of the summer camp for girls, Camp lllahee, that she attended as a teenager. She graduated in 1952, from Holton Arms High School, near DC. She especially appreciated her education in History, Music and the Arts at Holton. She started at Duke University, but in her Sophomore year, met her future husband, Forrest P. Anderson, on a train. They were married the following year, after he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. She opened and operated Arcana Fine Linens in Virginia Beach, with the help of her husband and many friends. She and her husband designed a custom vacation home that was built in 1986 near Kilmarnock, VA. The home was the site of many fun gatherings with friends and family. She was very active in the Virginia Beach Garden Club. She and her husband opened their home on Tuesday, April 22, 2003, as part of the Virginia Beach Garden Tour. She was a Master Gardener, the Family Historian and loved world history.
She and her family attended Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach, starting in the late 1960's. She sang in the Galilee choir for over 30 years. She also served as a "Lector" for many years at Galilee. In addition, she was member of the Virginia Chapter of the Colonial Dames of America. She also did volunteer work with Junior League Chapters in CA, DC, FL and VA.
A Memorial Service will be held at Galilee on Friday, January 2 at 1pm. Contributions can be made, on her behalf, to the Pipe Organ Fund and sent to Galilee at 3928 Pacific Ave,
