Hattie Davis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services - Bloomfield on Feb. 4, 2026.
Our beloved Ms. Hattie Stewart Davis was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, in-law, cousin, church member, neighbor and friend. She was born in Fairfield County in an area of South Carolina to the union of the late Milo Stewart, Sr. and Annie Bell Kelly Stewart on January 20, 1937. Hattie was called to eternal rest on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the home of her daughter, Lestina Herriott. Her journey on this earth ended peacefully leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness and quiet memories.

Hattie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She became a member of Sweet Prospect Church which later became New Home Independent Church in Blackstock, South Carolina. She received her education in the public schools in Fairfield County in South Carolina and she graduated from Fairfield High School.

After graduation, Hattie and the love of her life, Benjamin F. Davis, were married. Both continued to work, but later they decided to start a new life in the North. They moved to Hartford, Connecticut for better opportunities and a different way of life. It wasn't very long thereafter that "Frank" and Hattie were blessed with the greatest joy of their lives, two bubbly and beautiful girls, Lestina and Gail. Everyone was happy, especially their parents because now there were grandchildren to spoil and love.

Hattie was a quiet person with a caring spirit. Everyone who knew her enjoyed her gentle nature, her kind-heartedness, her nurturing and compassionate demeanor. She and her girls cherished cooking and hosting family meals; a tradition that brought her family together in love and laughter. She exemplified devotion to her family, church, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were truly the center of her joy and the apples of her eye.

Hattie loved her church, her friends and most importantly, she loved the Lord and His Word. She was a longstanding member at First Baptist Church, which later changed to First Cathedral. She loved coming home to South Carolina to visit family members, attend revivals and to hear her sister-in-law sing at her family church. The Word of God served as a source of strength enabling her to keep going and to remain active to care for her grands. She looked forward to running the race that is set before us as we stay focused on Jesus and persevere through trials. Now, she is at rest, her pains are over and her restless nights have passed. For Hattie, there is finally peace at last.

Hattie was preceded in death by her parents, Milo Stewart, Sr. and Annie Belle Kelly Stewart; her husband, Benjamin F. Davis; her daughter, Gail Lipscomb; four brothers: Milo Jr., John, Carnell and Roosevelt Stewart; a sister Elnora Mitchell, grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

Those left to cherish her loving memories and celebrate her homecoming are: her daughter, Lestina Herriott (Cecil); two sisters, Ida Mae Shelton (John) and Arthuretta Johnson (Charlie), Baltimore, Maryland; granddaughters, Tamika Lipscomb ; Shanti Jones (Will); Shawntay Lipscomb and Alyssa Herriott; and one grandson, Justin Lipscomb; great-grandchildren: Amaya Malcolm, Ava Jones, Mekiel Wright Lipscomb, Janelle Lipscomb, Ayden Herriott and Amara Jones; two sisters-in-law, Ann Davis of Camden, South Carolina and Emma Jane Foster Stewart of Winnsboro, South Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and caring friends.
