Mrs. Hattie Mae Hurst, affectionately known as "Ha-ha," was born on July 8, 1943, in Spartanburg, SC, and passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, surrounded by family. She was the beloved daughter of the late Mrs. Flossie Mae Petty Harris and Mr. Theodore Harris. Hattie was lovingly raised by the late Mrs. Catherine Jackson from the age of three.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Cannida and Mrs. Shirley Rice, her "daughter", Mrs. Alfredia Dawkins, her grandson, Mr. Jonathan Hurst, Jr., and her great-granddaughter, Ms. Tyquasia Young. Hattie received her education in the public schools of Spartanburg County. After many dedicated years of service, she retired from Butte Knit.
Mrs. Hurst was passionate about her family and enjoyed various activities, including fishing, singing, softball, baseball, wearing African attire, and traveling. Her spirit will live on in the many fond memories she created with her loved ones. Mrs. Hurst is survived by her children: Mrs. Mildred Jeter (Timothy), Mrs. Cynthia McDowell (the late Mitchell), Mr. James Hurst, and Mr. Jonathan Hurst, Sr. (Teresa). She was the proud grandmother of Mr. Kendrick Harris (Sparkle Holmes), Mr. Keith Stringer (Shakisha), Mr. Antonio Stringer (Denine), Mrs. Triveda Harris (Dion Alexander), Mr. Thaddeus Harris (LeKishja), Mr. Travis McDowell (Shikesta), Mrs. Tanisha Floyd (Durell), Mrs. Terreyta McDowell (Andy Gault), Mrs. Capathia Dawkins, and Mr. Joshua Dawkins (Stephanie), and Mr. Davian Hurst. Mrs. Hurst's legacy also includes 26 great-grandchildren, 2 great- great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and countless friends and loved ones.
She shared a close and enduring friendship with Mrs. Maxine Campbell, who will remember her fondly. Hattie Mae Hurst will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and community.
