Hazel Jean Bailey Reach, 78, of Montevallo, AL, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at the Healthcare Center at Buck Creek in Alabaster, Alabama. Hazel was born in Halifax County, North Carolina, on October 29, 1946. She was the daughter of the late James Thomas Bailey and Edna Dunston Bailey. Hazel grew up in a loving, close-knit family of 5 brothers and 3 sisters. She shared a unique bond with each of her siblings. Before moving to Alabama with her husband, Charles, she owned a beauty salon – The Hair Station – with her sister, Lois. Whenever Hazel would visit family back home, she always knew to bring her scissors because there would be a few that would want her to cut their hair. Hazel was an excellent cook and a request would be made for her homemade spaghetti too. Hazel's greatest love in life was her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She shared with one sister the nicknames "Lucy and Ethel," another sister was "Trixie," and " Ma Ma D" with her daughter. Those who knew Hazel would say she had a strong spirit and was a bit unfiltered, hence the nickname, "Crazy Hazel!" Throughout her life, she had a great love for music, dancing, bowling, doing word search puzzles, and completing tons of beautiful puzzles. She also loved the beauty of flowers, a good Western, and a bargain at a Thrift store. Heaven's gate opened on Tuesday morning, and Hazel was reunited with her parents, Jim Tom and Edna Bailey; her Stepson, Sammy Reach; her brothers, Rowland Bailey and Jimmy Bailey; her dog, Spanky and her cat, Toonts. Remaining on earth with sadness and great memories is her husband of 36 years, Charles; her daughters Pam King (Kevin) Montevallo, AL, Tracy Adair (Mike) Smithfield, NC, step-daughter, Carolyn Stokes (Steve) Sterrett, AL, like a daughter, Lynette Butler of Thorsby, AL; son, John Butler, Montevallo, AL; sisters, Lois Neville (Toby) Littleton, NC, Brenda Dunlow (Ernest) Roanoke Rapids, NC, Trudy McDermott (Andy) Roanoke Rapids, NC; brothers, Paul Bailey of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Jerry Bailey (Raye) Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Phillip Bailey (Angela) Roanoke Rapids, NC; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in law, Linda Reach Moore (Robert), Alabaster, AL, Ann and (Walter), Opelika, AL and her beloved dog, Smokey. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 1 PM at Bolton Funeral Home, 207 Highway 47 South, Columbiana, Alabama. Burial will be at Still Memorial Cemetery in Alabaster, Alabama. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 11AM to 1PM prior to the service. Hazel's family is forever grateful to The Healthcare Center at Buck Creek and to the staff (especially Ginny) with ACG Hospice. We are grateful for the dedicated family members who visited and cared for Mom throughout her time at the nursing home, and to Pam, Hazel's daughter, we extend our heartfelt thanks. She was a constant source of love and comfort for her during her time at the nursing home. Rest in peace, dear Hazel. You will always be loved, remembered, and missed.
