Hazel Edwards Young

Hazel E. Young passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, at home in Jonesville, Louisiana. Born on June 12, 1922, to Henry W. and Annie Mae Edwards. She was the oldest of four children.

Hazel was born at home in Jena, Louisiana and spent her early years in Jena and Ferriday, Louisiana. She graduated from Ferriday High school in 1938. Hazel married Henry Thomas (H.T.) Young on March 31, 1940, and began their married life in Jonesville. Hazel and H.T. enjoyed 59 years together.

Hazel is preceded in death by her husband; her parents Henry W. Edwards and Annie McLawchlin Edwards; brothers Lamar Edwards and Henry Edwards, Jr.; sister Mabel Edwards Lawless; brother-in-law Jack Lawless. Survived by sons: Kenneth Dale Young and wife Irene Allen Young; Dr. Henry Thomas Young, Jr. and wife Crista McNeely Young. She had five grandchildren: Stephanie Young Stampley and husband Eric Stampley, John Thomas Young, Henry Thomas Young III, Sarah Young Nolan and husband Blake Nolan, Michael Young and wife Marissa Sosa Young. She was also blessed with nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; Cade Stampley, Kendall Stampley, Simone Young, Olive Young, Skyler Aucoin, Lilly Nolan, Evie Nolan, James Young, Catherine Young, Henry Issac Young; brother-in-law Dale Young, and many loved nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Hazel, known to the family as "Grandmother", loved her family and offered love, encouragement, support, and her point of view on things as she thought was appropriate. She was a working mother providing a Christian foundation for home life and education of her two boys. Hazel was a faithful member of the Jonesville First Baptist Church for over 70 years, a member of the Jonesville Women's Club for many years and a former member of the Garden Club. She and her husband, H.T. Young, owned and operated Young's Grocery and Western Auto on Hwy 84 in Jonesville for many years. She worked in bookkeeping/accounting for Dillon's Machine Shop in Ferriday and with several other businesses and families in the Jonesville area. Jonesville was a special place to Hazel and H.T. They enjoyed serving the community in many ways and the great number of friends made.

Hazel loved to cook and entertain especially for large family gatherings. The family always looked forward to holiday meals (always the same menu) and her special dressing with the turkey. She enjoyed yardwork, shopping, visiting and traveling with family, and socializing with friends. She had a special ministry in caring for several family members in their later years.

The family wishes to thank Jenny Gibson and Jennifer O'Gwin of Magnolia Caregivers for their wonderful Christian love and care; also, the nurses of Enhabit for their wonderful care. We have been fortunate to enjoy the support of several special friends, the Jonesville First Baptist Church, Jonesville Women's Club, Jonesville Police, and numerous others in the community. Thanks so much to all.

Pallbearers will be: John Young, Thomas Young, Blake Nolan, Eric Stampley, Joe Zucarro and Cade Stampley.

Honorary pallbearers: LaDelle Sandifer, Gary Odom and Michael Young.
