Helen Christensen, 92, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025. She was born in Orange NJ, on October 28, 1932 to Seth and Lucy McCormick. The family moved to Waterloo, Iowa where she graduated from Waterloo High school in 1950. She met the love of her life, Jay, there. They were married on June 6, 1959. They had 65 years together before he passed away on July 10, 2024. She was a first class gardener, made the best deviled eggs, and loved hosting parties through the years, especially on the 4th of July and Christmas. She was a longtime volunteer of more than 30 years at Fairview Southdale and was recognized many times for her care, empathy and compassion.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jay; and her parents, Seth and Lucy. She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Jean (Skip) Spang, Karen (Steve) Geronime, Sue (John) Wilkie, and Sandra (Shannon) Huber; grandchildren, Christine, Michael, Martha, Jay, Jennifer, and Bradley; and great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Lila, and Tristan.
Although losing both our parents close together is hard, we take comfort in knowing they are with each other where they are meant to be. Mom never failed to wave goodbye and we imagine she did just that on her way to heaven.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, May 22, at Washburn-McReavy Dawn Valley Chapel. Visitation one hour prior. Interment to follow at Dawn Valley Memorial Park.
