Helen Irene Eckelman was born in Lincoln, KS on December 17, 1938. Helen passed away on March 4, 2024 in Missoula, MT.
Helen was a devoted, loving mother. When her children left home, Helen pursued a degree in education. In 1984, she graduated from the University of Montana and in 1985 moved to Akiachak, Alaska to begin her teaching career. Helen found her second calling in Alaska. In 1990, Helen received her Masters in Education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Helen continued working in various villages in Alaska as a Principal until she retired in 2010.
Helen loved the challenges she faced in Alaska. She cherished the friendships of teachers, colleagues, and staff members. The students were nearest and dearest to her heart. Helen shared many stories about her adventures in Alaska and the ones about the students were her favorite.
Upon retiring in 2010, Helen moved to Auburn, WA and in 2016, she moved to Missoula, MT. Helen is survived by her daughter Tammy (Dennis) Brugh of Downers Grove, IL, her son Monte Eckelman of Kent, WA, her daughter Kelly Syth of Ellsworth, KS, 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
There will be no service.
