Peggy Greifer passed away after a long-term illness on August 12, 2025. Born July 10, 1933, in Chicago, IL, to John and Helen Kyndberg of Waukegan, IL, she graduated from Waukegan Township High School in 1950 and received a BA in history from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1954.

After college, Peggy traveled to Austria with the Experiment in International Living where she met Elisha Greifer to whom she was married 1955-1971. The couple lived in Cambridge and Wheaton, MA; Poughkeepsie, NY; Tucumán, Argentina; Guayaquil and Quito, Ecuador before settling in Marquette, MI in 1967.

Peggy earned an MA in Education from Northern Michigan University in 1970 after which she worked for the NICE Community School District as a reading specialist and third grade teacher, actively involved with the Young Authors Conference, until her retirement in 1997.

In retirement she traveled frequently to Mallorca, Spain, as well as other parts of Europe and Latin America. Aside from travel, Peggy enjoyed cross-country skiing, swimming, socializing with friends and family, and volunteering for the Democratic Party. She was an avid patron of the arts, supporting many Marquette area artists and exhibiting an eclectic collection of art in her colorful home.

Peggy will be remembered for her sunny disposition, vivid imagination, whimsical sense of humor, and strong perseverance - especially in the face of health and other life challenges.

In 2014 Peggy moved to assisted living in Evanston, IL. She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Morrow Kyndberg; father, Dr. John George Kyndberg; stepmother, Harriet Webster Kyndberg, and son, Timothy Greifer.

She is survived by her daughter Maggie Greifer Mosley of Evanston, IL and sons, John (Susan) Greifer of Silver Spring, MD; Andrew (Stacey Weinberg) Greifer of Ann Arbor, MI and Nicholas (Judith) Greifer of Evanston, IL, as well as eight grandchildren who, in birth order, include: Lauren Mosley, Maya Greifer, Jacqueline Mosley, Natalie Greifer, Sari Greifer, Jacob Greifer, Raina Greifer, and Sten Greifer followed by great-granddaughter, Josephine Mosley Ossyra.

Funeral arrangements are private. In lieu of flowers, friends of Peggy may consider a donation to Lake Superior Art Association or another arts organization of their choice.
