Helen Cooke Hagy, (MawMaw), of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024. She was born in Berwind, WV on February 16, 1930, and was the daughter of the late Benjamine E. Cooke and Ila Deloris Cooke. Helen spent her childhood in Grundy, VA then moved to Abingdon, VA to attend nursing school. It was in Abingdon that she met the love of her life, Edward Bryan Hagy, Jr. (E.B.). They married in 1949 and spent 72 beautiful years together. They were inseparable. After Helen and E.B. married they moved to Pittsburg, PA for E.B. to attend college. While there Helen wanted to help support them, so she pursued a job at Arthur Murray Dance Studio as a dance instructor. When asked if she had any experience in teaching dance she said, "no, but its your job to teach me". So, they did, and she became a dance instructor! That was Helen, calmly tenacious and persuasive. Upon E.B. graduating they moved to Roanoke, VA, then Greensboro, NC where they raised their children. During this time Helen worked as a guidance counselor and as E.B.s assistant for Hagy Advertising. When E.B. retired they moved to their "happy place"; their home on the Neuse River in Minnesott Beach, NC. They loved being on the river, traveling, sailing and hosting their children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren, relatives and friends for many years. It was their "heaven on earth". Helen was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, Peggy Weller, Betty Sue Gurkan, Mary Ann Trent and Billy Cooke; her son-in-law Brooks Jacobs; and her beloved, E.B. Surviving are her children, Debby Hagy Jacobs, Edward Bryan Hagy III (Carol); her grandchildren, Abby Jacobs Hudson (Ted), Kaley Jacobs Parody (Randy), Molly Jacobs Stevens (Chris), Holly Hagy Eaddy (Scott), and Hunter Bryan Hagy (Emily); as well as her great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Lucy Eaddy, Ellie and Tucker Hudson, Raleigh Stevens, Carter, Piper and Ember Parody and Annie and Gray Hagy, all living in Raleigh, NC. Also, special "bonus" grandchildren, Cassidy Bayliff of Raleigh and Grayson Bayliff of Greensboro, NC. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews and her close nephew, Beecher Owenof Greensboro, NC. Helen was extremely devoted to her family and was happiest when she was with them. The family sends a very heartfelt thank you to the staff and caregivers at Sunrise at North Hills and Transitions Life Care. You are our angels. A family celebration of Helens life will be held at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, VA on November 30, 2024.
