Walter Hazzard Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cremation Society of the Carolinas/Capital Funeral Home - Raleigh on Sep. 18, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Surrounded by family, care, and compassion, Walter Wesley Hazzard, 89, of Hillsborough, North Carolina, went to be with our Heavenly Father on September 15, 2025, after a lengthy battle with cancer at Parkview Health and Rehab Center in Chapel Hill.

He was born May 12, 1936, in Milford, Delaware, the son of Walter and Jean Hazzard. The second of six children, Walter spent his life in the grocery business most of it in management. Known for his humor, he loved making people laugh and smile.

Walter enjoyed woodworking in his shop, listening to all kinds of music, and camping in his camper in Chincoteague, Virginia. In later years, he found joy in going out to lunch with friends, forming a group called ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out). He often said his daily goal was to make at least one person smile - if he did, he considered it a good day.

Walter was preceded in death by his first wife, Martharee, his son Walter Vance, granddaughter Heather Ratliff, and his second wife, Jewel. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Deborah and husband Duane Gilbert; grandson Gregory Ratliff Jr. and wife Heather of Graham, NC; granddaughter Amber Nicole Ratliff of Timberlake,NC; four great-grandchildren, Dylan Ratliff, Jaxon Ratliff, Zaedin Huffman, and Sawyer Ratliff; stepdaughter Libby and husband David Greenough; step-

grandchildren Heather Lloyd and husband Paul and David Jr. and three step-great-grandchildren Bryson, Corbin and Gavin.

Walter's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Parkview Health and Rehab Center for their kindness, friendship, and care during his stay. He cared deeply about each of you.

Scripture John 14.1.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
