Henrietta Neuburger died at home in the care of her family on Thursday, August 22, 2024, one month after her 97th birthday.

Born Henrietta Alexander in Rehlingen, Germany, Henny was the daughter of Max and Lily Alexander. She had an older brother and sister, Marcel and Edith, who pre- deceased her. Max ran the town butcher shop, which shared a building with the family home. After the rise of Hitler in 1936, Henny and her family were forced to leave Germany and fled to Luxembourg, where they lived for a year. When they were able to, they immigrated to America with the help and sponsorship of Henny's Uncle Siegfried, who had come earlier.

Henny did not speak English when she started school at PS 7 in the Bronx in New York City but learned quickly. She was in the Honor Society at George Washington High School and then attended Hunter College, where she earned her teaching degree.

Immediately after finishing college, Henny met the man with whom she would spend the next three-quarters of a century. Werner was a handsome GI and budding engineer. They seemed made for each other. After marrying in 1950, the couple embarked on joined lives filled with love, satisfying work, family and good friends.

They started out on Riverside Drive in Manhattan and moved to West Nyack in 1960, where they would spend the next 55 years. They were blessed with three sons who were her pride and joy, Henny taught kindergarten, part-time at first and then full-time, successfully becoming a working mom and loving manager of family life. After retirement, Henny took care of herself with daily exercise classes, time with friends and volunteering.

In 2015 Henny and Werner moved to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, NJ. They played bridge and travelled to visit family. She continued to take exercise and other classes there. She nurtured friendships and started new ones, as she did her whole life. Henny had a wide circle of friends. They were always a priority for her and they loved her too. Many appreciated her wry sense of humor and her frank, direct approach to life.

She will be missed by her sons David, Jon and Dan; daughters-in-law, Marilyn, Kate and Ann; grandchildren Rebecca, Mark, Sonia, Owen, Erica, Amanda, Melissa, and Joshua: and two great grandchildren, Jon and Asher.
