On August 4 th , Allen peacefully departed this earthly realm on his journey to his
eternal home in heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Allen was born in Rockwood, AL, moving to Miami when his father went to work for
Florida Power and Light after the 1936 hurricane. Allen and his twin Jack graduated from
Miami Senior High in 1952, just like their mother in 1928.
They both joined the Army the next year, going their separate paths with Jack in the
Signal Corps and Allen in the Medical Corps. Allen trained at Ft. Sam Houston, TX as a
medical technologist before being assigned Ft. Jackson SC for a year and then to the
7553 rd Army unit in Puerto Rico as the only Lab Tech. Unable to get leave before
reenlisting, he took his discharge instead and married his Rainbow/DeMolay sweetheart
Charlotte Joyce Warren in Miami. He then reenlisted for Ft. Jackson SC and returned to
Sam Houston, TX to complete the Advanced Laboratory Tech Course. While in Texas, his
first son, Howard was born. The Army then moved the new family to Anchorage, AK,
where they were able to spend time with his sister Winona's family in Fairbanks while
adding two more sons, Robert and then Vincent. He served until 1962 (10 years total)
before he got out to get more education.
Allen moved back to Miami and started his college education at Miami-Dade Junior
College and went to work at the new Baptist hospital from whence he later retired at age
65. Allen worked almost every shift and position for the first few years, gravitating to the
chemistry department on the 3-11 shift where he trained many generations of other techs.
Allen and Charlotte divorced in 1971 and Allen then met and married Carol Hamilton Weir
in 1972. Along with a new wife, Allen added another son, his "step" son Andrew or Andy.
Allen and Carol were active with a camping group. Carol passed away in 2012 from Brain
Cancer and Allen wandered for a couple years.
Allen developed Melanoma in 1996 and began his battle with this tenacious cancer.
While continuing to work he underwent several treatments, including several
groundbreaking Video Assisted Thoracic Surgeries on both of his lungs and an "Open
Chest" surgery. He also traveled for clinical trials and treatments to San Francisco,
Washington DC, Tampa and Houston. After Houston he returned to Baptist Hospital for
Chemo to attack the Melanoma that had invaded his pulmonary system. He then
underwent CyberKnife treatments for a small spot on his left lung, which was successful,
while starting High dose IV Vitamin C therapy at home. Allen became Melanoma free after
a round of CyberKnife treatments on his left clavicle lymph nodes in May of 2008. Allen
praised God for leading him to the right physicians along his treatment journey. Many
doctors upon hearing his journey with Melanoma told him he was a "Walking Miracle".
In early 2014, Allen had the great luck to find another lifetime partner and "love of
his life" when he married Sissel Hopper. He had initially met Sissel when he and Carol
were actively camping back in the 1980's. Sissel's late husband Robert "Bob" had been a
longtime friend of Allen's and Sissel was a longtime friend of Carol's. He reconnected with

Sissel when he was having trouble with his camper and called her to see if she had any
suggestions. She coordinated with Stewart's Mobile Village, and they were able to take
care of his issue the next day. He camped out afterwards in her backyard using the RV
hookups Sissel and Bob had previously installed. He and Sissel played the tourist bit in
the Sebring and Avon Park area. He once said that "just before he left Sebring to go back
to Miami, he gave Sissel a little peck on the lips and Cupid stuck an arrow in his heart".
After couple months of cards, emails and phone calls Allen came back to Sebring for a
dinner dance. They got engaged in March and married on Cinco de Mayo day (5/5/2014).
Allen was happy to have found someone to love at 80, who would also put up with his
somewhat demanding nature.
Allen was active in several civic groups throughout his life; including as a senior
DeMolay, a Mason (over 55 years), a member with Highlands Shrine Club where he
served as 1 st vice president for over 4 years and a member of the Eastern Star, but his
greatest enjoyment and joy was with his Christian friends at First Baptist Church of
Sebring. He was a lifelong Christian and a member of several different churches during his
lifetime. He started in his youth taking a bus to Central Baptist downtown, when WWII and
gas rationing hit, he shifted to a Presbyterian Church and was ordained as a Deacon at 17.
He returned to Palmetto Presbyterian Church after leaving the Army before shifting to his
parents former Methodist Church in the 70s. He came to Sebring and was then "Dunked"
at the age of 80 to become a member of the First Baptist Church where he was a member
of the Friendship Keepers class, the Men Up Bible study group on Wednesdays,
Keenagers and the Tuesday morning Bible Study at Dee's restaurant.
Allen was preceded in death by his mother Eula Faye (Chase) Carr and father Elmer
Davies Carr, his twin brother Jack and by his first wife Charlotte and second wife Carol. He
is survived by his loving wife Sissel and his four sons and their spouses, Howard (Alicia)
of Dripping Springs TX, Robert of North Miami FL and Vincent (Gail) of Cooper City FL
and Andy (Leslie) of Hallandale FL, along with his step daughter, Dianne (Dale) of
Lakeland Fl, his wonderful Sister Winona Howard of Fairbanks AK, his sister-in-law
Barbara (Jack) of Avon Park, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with
numerous nieces and nephews.
Allen may be gone but he will be hard to forget, as he will be missed by all the friends he
made and irritated over the years.
In closing, we leave you with two thoughts that guided Allen's life.
1) From minister Dr. Roy Angel's "The Second Mile" sermon, "It is not the first mile that
you HAVE to walk, but the second mile that you FEEL that you need or should
walk".
2) His Grandfather Henry Asbury Carr's expression "You can fool everyone in the
world, but you can't fool the man in the mirror."
