Herbert "Herb" Wayne Carlson, age 89, of Nekoosa, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2021 at Aspirus Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids.
A funeral service will be held at Feldner/Ritchay Funeral Home in Nekoosa on Monday, December 27, 2021 at 12:00 Noon with Rev. Timothy Miller officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Military honors will follow the service. A public graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at 10 a.m.
Herb was born on June 27, 1932 in Wisconsin Rapids, to Richard and Edith (Jero-Phelps) Carlson. He was the youngest of six children. Herb was raised in Wisconsin Rapids where he attended school.
He worked a variety of jobs, Johnson Hills, Consolidated Paper, Glebke Dairy all before entering into the U.S. Navy in November of 1951. He was stationed in Norfolk; he served as a radioman on the Aircraft Carrier USS Roosevelt and the destroyer USS Walke. Traveling the Mediterranean and the Far East during the Korean War. While he was in the Navy, he married Maude Long which ended in divorce. He was discharged in December of 1955 and returned to Glebke Dairy and Laemmerhirt Realty gaining his Real Estate License. He then managed the Factory Outlet Store in Wisconsin Rapids.
He married Marveen Oleson on August 4, 1956 at the Nekoosa United Church of Christ in Nekoosa. They had three children, Tina, Steven, and Scott.
Herb went on to manage Beacon Warehouse Furniture in Madison off and on from 1959 to 1979. He opened Nekoosa Furniture, The Bargain Center, and the Rialto Theater from 1967 to 1972.
He went to school and obtained his Real Estate Brokers License, his Auctioneer License and opened Herb Carlson Realty and Auction Service in Nekoosa in 1978. He also completed certification to become an Assessor, taught at Mid-State Technical College in Real Estate and Auctioneering for many years. Herb also drove a school bus for Safeway from 1980 to 1995. He maintained his State Auctioneer Certification until 1999.
He was very active in his community, belonging to the Nekoosa Lions Club, serving in many offices. Leading him to the state level as Lt. Governor of Wisconsin Lions, District Governor working with 90 different clubs covering 2500 members and 5 countries. He was the Lion Foundation director in 1991 and served on the Sight, Hearing, and Camp committees until 1997. He earned many awards in the Lions, Melvin Jones Fellow, and the Birch Sturm Fellowship.
With Marveen he worked as custodian for the United Church of Christ in Nekoosa and served in many roles on the church committees.
Herb was dedicated to the Nekoosa School system serving on the school board from 1984 to 1999as a member and president. His greatest joy was greeting the teachers in the beginning of the year, wishing them a Merry Christmas, and a great summer at the end of the year.
He was appointed to the office of Clerk of the Town of Armenia, in Juneau County in 1988 and continued to serve until April of 2015. He was elected to the Juneau County Board of Supervisors for Armenia, Cutler, Finley and Kingston area. He served on the Solid Waste, Insurance, Finance and Computer, And Sheriff's Committees.
Herb was the treasurer of the Greenwood Cemetery Association since 1980. He was a life member of the VFW Post 2334 of New Miner serving as Post Commander and Adjutant. A member of the American Legion Post number 322 of Babcock where he served as Chaplain.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven; brothers, Richard Carlson, Donald Carlson, Archie Phelps; sister, Dorothy Laemmerhirt; brothers-in-law, Willilam Laemmerhirt, Curtis Oleson; sisters-in-law, Lilas Carlson, Millie Phelps, Francis Wesley, Denna Winters and LaVera Hamann.
Herb is survived by his wife Marveen of Nekoosa; children, Tina (Jon) Krummel of Wis. Rapids, Scott (Mary) Carlson of Tryon N.C.; grandchildren, Robert (Samantha) Krummel of Wisc. Rapids, Evan (Rebecca) Carlson, Shay (Gavin Folgert) Carlson, Gabriella (Dan Faultersack) Carlson of Madison Wi, Ivana Carlson of Tryon N.C., Sterling Carlson-Worden, Reid Carlson-Worden of Stoughton Wi; great-grandchildren, Destiny Zernicke, Dalton Krummel, Soren Carlson; brother, Leon Carlson; brothers-in-law, Wesley Oleson, Daniel (LaVon) Oleson, Kenneth Winters; sister-in-law, Marion Oleson and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
The family would like to say a thank you to the staff of Aspirus Riverview Hospital for their care the last few weeks. They would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Hilltop on Pepper for their love and care of Herb this last year.
