Herbert Dozier Farmer, 88 of Lumberton, took his final drive Sunday morning, February 16, 2025, from his home in the Magnolia community of Stone county. He was born December 18th, 1936 in Seminary, one of eight children to Dozier and Mary (Bowman) Farmer. Herbert grew up in the Seminary area of Covington county where his family was sharecroppers. The country and farm life, which included a lot of work, was just the norm. He enjoyed playing with his brothers and sisters when all their chores and work was done, and quail hunting quickly became one of his favorite things to do. After his educational pursuits was done and he was old enough, Herbert joined the US Army. He proudly served his three year hitch, which included overseas duty during the Korean War as it was coming to a close. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and worked on the farm. The family moved to the Bond community where he met his wife, known to everyone as "Shortie". They were married February 13, 1960 and made their home out in Magnolia, where they spent their lives together. Herbert got in to driving, hauling milk in the beginning, but enjoyed it so much that he eventually bought his own truck. He spent the rest of his working career driving, hauling several different things, but livestock was definitely his favorite. He is remembered as a hard working, family oriented man who had a deep faith in God. Herbert, or Poppy as those closest to him called him, was eager to share his faith wherever he went, with anyone who would listen. He did so unapologetically and loved to sing gospel songs as well. When he wasn't on the road, you could always find him at home with his cattle, bird dogs, and family. Poppy was a simple, straight forward man of his word, who worked hard, provided for his family, and did his best to always do what was right. His memories will be forever cherished, until we are all reunited in glory. Poppy was preceded by his parents, Dozier and Mary Farmer, his siblings: Dicie Ingram, Icey Wade, Tressie Ishee, and Johnny Farmer, and a sister-in-law Barbara Farmer. Left to cherish his memories are: his loving soul-mate of over sixty-five years, Shortie; their daughters, Mona (David) Wedgeworth and Dawn (David) Lee, both of Stone county; his brothers George and David Farmer, and his sister Ida Hickman. Poppy leaves a legacy of three grandchildren: Seth and Tia Wedgeworth, and Sabra Lee, along with countless extended family and friends through the years. Herbert loved his home in Magnolia, and only left it when he had to. His family will lay him to rest there in a private, graveside ceremony. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Farmer family in their time of need and asks that you remember them in your thoughts and prayers through the days ahead.
