Herbert John Hanss was born in Semarang, Indonesia on February 27, 1948 to Dirk and Constance Hanss. Being of Dutch descent, the family returned to Holland and put in their application to come to America. That was granted in 1959 and they settled in California,
Herb grew up loving and playing music in his own band called the Del Rays. His love for cars led him to buying and driving vehicles of various types and models, even racing on circuit tracks.
After high school, Herb was drafted into the army, serving 2 years and spending 1 1/2 years in Germany. After discharge he returned to California and was hired by the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after many years of service. After retirement he performed several jobs including announcing for radio controlled car races and working at an RC hobby store.
At the urging of his brother, Herb moved to the Kansas City, Missouri area and was hired by Harrah's Casino in vending, making sure all machines were serviced and stocked with supplies. He spent 12 years with Harrah's Casino.
Herb's hobbies included driving RC cars and RC airplanes. His musical interests led him into buying and playing guitars. His favorite bands included The Eagles, Chicago, Los Lonely Boys and the cover band Leonid and Friends.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents Dirk and Constance Hanss. He is survived by sons Jeffrey (Helena) Hanss of Georgia, Jay (Gretchen) Hanss of California and daughter, Kelley Hanss of California. Sisters Grace Mertens, Oude Kerk a/d Amstel, Netherlands, Brenda (Gary) Barnum, California, Sylvia (Rick) Bittner, Arizona, brother, Ray (Debbie) Hanss, Missouri, Linda Walker, companion, Missouri, Linda's daughter Marcia Gann and Linda's grandsons Jackson and Anthony Gann, Missouri.. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Malia, Shelby, Makenna, J.J., Sadie, Dean and James as well as many friends and other relatives.
Herb was known for his wittiness and telling jokes. As a child coming to America he spoke no English, mastered it, and later in life some called him the English gestapo. He will truly be missed by all.
Herb's remains have been shipped to California where he will lay in rest.
A private Celebration of Life for close friends and family will be held at his brothers home in Missouri and another in California. Please contact family members for info.

I met Herb in 6th grade at John Adam's elementary. He lived down the street from me and I loved the Dutch licorice he used to get. We both served in the army during Vietnam and worker until retirement in the Santa Ana Post Office District. I would run into him often while we both lived in California. You will be missed
