Herbert Franklin Kay

Mohawk, NY

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Herbert Franklin Kay, 78, of Mohawk. He passed away on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Waterville Residential Care Center after a short stay. He was Herb or Herbie to those that knew him.

Son of the late Donald and Monica Kay, he was born April 10, 1947. He was a very proud US Army veteran who served his country honorably during the Vietnam War. During his time there he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was last employed at Remington Arms and retired from there many years ago.

Herb leaves behind his daughter, Lisa Sargent, and son-in-law, Tyler Sargent, whom he held in high regard. He also leaves behind many friends, especially the owner, crew, and regular patrons of Crazy Otto's Empire Diner in Herkimer.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Calvin Kay, and a baby nephew, James Kay. Herb never met his nephew as he was in Vietnam when James was born and passed away.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Dimbleby Funeral Homes Inc. 365 West Main St in West Winfield with Pastor Ken McKenzie officiating. Military Honors will follow the service at the funeral home. Private burial at Kinne Cemetery, Litchfield, will be held later.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider donating in Herb's memory to a military veteran organization of your choice. It would honor Herb to know that other veterans would get help of some kind.

Herb enjoyed nature to the fullest; growing up on a farm, living on a country road, fishing, and hunting as much as he was able to. He was quiet, stubborn but always kind, humorous, and generous in many ways. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

Lisa & Tyler Sargent, Niagara University was never meant to be, instead your Dad and respective father-in-law answered the country's call as he was called up in the draft and served his country with honor, dignity, courage and conviction in a far away land in the light infantry patrol as scout and sniper behind enemy lines. For his wounds endured, both visible and invisible, he received the Purple Heart. He lived the Warrior Ethos; I will always place the mission first, I will never accept defeat, I will never quit, I will never leave a fallen comrade. His spirit and soul are now set free to roam a cold crisp wood for the perfect buck or doe to shoot, to roam a cold brook or stream for the perfect rainbow trout to hook, to now rejoin his squad of long ago and his brother Calvin, Aunt Monica and Uncle Don. An American Hero crossed over the rainbow and saw the face of God on Friday, 15 August 2025. May he rest in eternal peace and love in heaven as we know he saw and survived hell on earth in Vietnam when he was only 18 to 20 years old. Herb's mission is now complete. May you all have peace, power and strength in the days ahead. May you all have peace in knowing that Herb is at rest in peace.

Lisa and Tyler,We are so very sorry to read of your dad's passing. My cousin was a very talented piano player. I have such fond memories of listening to Calvin and him playing at Aunt Monica'sand Uncle Dons. We were all very proud of him for serving our country so diligently. May he rest in eternal peace and may perpetual light shine upon him.
