Herbert Peter Kurz, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on October 7, 2024, at the age of 77. Herb is survived by his devoted wife, Dawn Kurz, whom he married in 1998, and his adoring children: Blaze Kurz (Julie), Anastasia "Staci" Kurz, and Christy Gamber (Ryan). He took great joy in his role as "Pop" to his grandchildren: Jonathan, Joshua, Ella, Jackson, Benjamin, and Connor. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Pauline Kurz and the beloved brother of Nancy, Paula, and Michael.
Herbert was born and raised in North Philadelphia. He was a graduate of North Catholic High School in 1965, Herb enjoyed vacations at Wildwood, New Jersey, especially in September, and going on cruises.
A true Philadelphia sports fan, Herb was an ardent supporter of the Eagles, Phillies, and Penn State Football. His love for cooking shone brightest during family gatherings, especially when preparing homemade raviolis for Palm Sunday Dinner. Herb's big heart and generous spirit were felt by all who knew him. Herbert was a devoted family man and he organized countless family reunions.
Herb proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970, primarily stationed in England, where he worked in crash rescue. After his military service, he dedicated 35 years to the United States Postal Service as a postman and was actively involved in the postal workers' union. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Family and friends are invited to Herbert's Life Celebration on Thursday, October 10th from 9 – 11 AM at the John F. Givnish Funeral Home, 10975 Academy Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19154. A funeral service and time of sharing will follow at 11 AM. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
