Herbert Levine

Herbert (Herb) Levine, of Milton, Massachusetts, passed away on December 19, 2024, at the age of 83.
He was the devoted son of the late Benjamin (Lukie) and Katie Levine and the beloved husband of the late Arline Levine. Herb was a loving father to Eric Levine and his wife Susan, and Cindy Kobelin and her husband Marc. He was a cherished grandfather to Samuel, Benjamin, and Isaac Levine, and Ethan and Tyler Kobelin. Herb was also the dear brother of Janice Gershlak.
Herb was born in Boston and grew up in Mattapan in a 3-decker house with his parents, grandparents, and an aunt and uncle and their family. His mother had 9 brothers and sisters who all lived in the area. He attended high school at Boston English and college at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. It was during his college years that he was introduced to his future wife, Arline, by a cousin, who were both nursing students at Beth Israel Hospital.
Herb worked as a chemist and lab director, originally at Beth Israel Hospital and later at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He spent 40 years working with Dr.Stuart Schlossman, contributing to groundbreaking work in tumor immunology and flow cytometry. Their group pioneered the use of monoclonal antibodies in treating immune cell disorders including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, and other cancers. He also spent a year working at Harvard Medical school with Nobel Prize winner Baruj Benacerraf.
Herb was an active member of the Brightview and Fuller Village residential communities, including starring in several theatrical productions. He was an avid reader of thrillers and mystery novels and loved watching and playing tennis. Herb cherished his family above all else and loved spending time with his grandchildren and encouraging their many adventures.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Lindwood Memorial Park in Randolph, Massachusetts. Donations may be made in Herb's memory to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at www.jimmyfund.org/gift.
