Herbert E. Liedtke Jr., a cherished soul born on August 25, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio, departed this world on September 15, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will forever linger in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. An esteemed electrical engineer with MK Ferguson, Herbert was more than just a man of numbers and circuits; he was a beacon of laughter and warmth, a pocket keeper of Oreos, and a devoted family man whose spirit effortlessly brightened every room he entered.
As a proud captain of the basketball team at South High School, achieving the status of Runner-up in the State Division, Herbert's youthful ambition paved the way for a life filled with achievement. He carried the essence of competition into adulthood, indulging his passion for sports through bowling, golf, basketball, football, and baseball. Among treasured memories, many will recall the countless days spent on the golf course with his beloved brother Dexter, their camaraderie extending well into their 80s—a testament to the enduring bonds of brotherhood.
Herbert’s laughter was infectious, and his humor was a balm for the weary soul. Those who crossed his path were often greeted with his all-around happy disposition, which became a signature trait of a man who truly embraced life and all its whimsy. His love for his miniature Schnauzers illustrated the tender side of his personality, allowing a glimpse into the heart of a man who valued the simple pleasures in life.
His family, a source of pride and joy, includes his devoted wife, Carole (nee Drews); their daughter, Linda Fischer (Al Shaneyfelt); grandchildren, Keith Liedtke, Samantha Dawson (Nick), Carl Fischer, J. Christopher Liedtke, and Jessica Liedtke; great-grandson, Theodore Dawson; siblings, Karen O’Laughlin (Theodore George), Peggy Mastnardo (the Late Robert), Charlene Rees, and Sharon Maxwell (Fred); and brother-in-law, Jack Kolenz. He is also survived by his friend, Ray, and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Sr. and Charlotte, as well as his son, James Liedtke, who departed too soon from this earth; and his siblings, Robert Liedtke, Dexter Liedtke, Laura Hansen, Russell Liedtke, Maxine Haught, Marlene Kolenz and Trudine Sroka.
A visitation to honor Herbert’s remarkable journey will be held on September 19, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM at the Reichlin Roberts Bollinger Funeral Home located at 327 Cleveland St, Elyria, Ohio. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. This day will be one of reflection and celebration, a time to come together and remember a man who was not defined merely by his career but rather by the joy he imparted onto others.
Herbert E. Liedtke Jr. remains in our hearts, a figure of unparalleled joy, humor, and love. His legacy is indelible, a reminder to cherish laughter and family, and to hold onto those Oreos a little tighter.
