Herbert Maurice Mitchell, SFC USA Ret, 80 years old, passed away peacefully on Apr 27, 2025 due to medical complications caused by Agent Orange Exposure, with his family by his side. Maurice was born on July 20, 1944 in Portsmouth, Virginia to John Edward Mitchell Sr and Mildred Deloris Mitchell.
He joined the United States Army in 1966 and was a highly decorated soldier serving a combat tour in Vietnam. Following his retirement from the US Army after nearly 21 years, he continued his life of service working for the United States Postal Service. He worked for the Post Office for 17 years before needing to retire following a diagnosis of lung cancer caused by exposure to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mildred Mitchell and four brothers; John, Robert, Alton, and Albert Mitchell.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Norine Mitchell and their three children. Monique Crummett, husband Justin and their son Noah. Son Christopher Mitchell and wife Brigette. Son Michael Mitchell, wife Pamela and their children Felix and Akela. He is also survived by two sons from his first marriage; Dwyane Mitchell, wife Becky and their son Amir. Dwayne's daughters, Monique, Shannika, CaSaundra, and Camil. Victor Mitchell and his children, Destiny, Victor, Victoria, and Kavhon. He is also survived by a cousin who was like a brother, Hannable Weldon of Capital Heights, MD and many nieces and nephews.
Though he experienced countless medical issues and complications related to his service to our country, he lived his life with no complaints. Those who knew Maurice will likely remember his infectious smile and personality that brightened any room.
A graveside service will be held on July 18, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 143 Blue Star Ave, Augusta, ME 04330.
