Greenville- Herbert Taylor Sugg passed away at Cypress Glen on June 18, 2024, just four days prior to his ninety-second birthday.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Kinston at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Following the service, the family will receive friends for a luncheon in the Church's Hamilton Hall. A private burial will be held at Maplewood Cemetery.
Herbert was born in Kinston, North Carolina on June 22, 1932 and was the youngest child of Isaac Palmer Sugg and Mildred Taylor Sugg. He attended public schools in Kinston, was a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and returned to Kinston, where he began both a lengthy career with Mutual Building & Loan (later Mutual Savings & Loan, later BB&T) and a marriage of over 66 years to Jone Long Sugg. After his retirement from banking, his fondest times were the many weekends and trips he and Jone shared with their much-loved family.
He was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church, served multiple terms on the Session, and helped shepherd his Church's Finance Committee for over fifty years. Herbert loved fishing and hunting throughout Eastern North Carolina, especially when accompanied by one or both of his sons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Isaac Palmer Sugg, and his sister Mildred (Mickey) Sugg Mullikin.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Herbert Taylor Sugg, Jr. and wife, Nancy Etheridge Sugg of Kitty Hawk and Randolph Palmer Sugg and wife, Jill Brady Sugg of Raleigh. Also surviving are his granddaughters, Carson Taylor Sugg of New York, Wallis Williams Sugg of Los Angeles, and Olivia Wade Sugg of Kitty Hawk; as well as two nieces and four nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church (fpckinston.org) or the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (macular.org).
