Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brooks & White Funeral Home and Crematory - Roxboro on Dec. 10, 2024.
Rev. Herman M. Chambers went to his heavenly home on Sunday, December 8, 2024. Herman was born, January 9, 1930 to Edgar and Oppie Chambers. He is predeceased by his wife, Frances C Chambers, son, Eddie Chambers, son-in-law, Mark Ellis and three sisters Lucille Kerns, Gertie Gaster and Marie Chambers. He leaves behind his daughter, Cindy Ellis, and son, Boyd Chambers (Peggy), Herman had 7 grandchildren, Justin Chambers (Kira), Travis Chambers (Miranda), Lance Ellis, Cody Ellis (Crystal), Brandon Chambers, Kristin Chambers and Lexie Chambers and 5 great grandchildren.
Herman was a "30 Year Man". A story he loved sharing with everyone he met. He was born in 1930, he farmed for 30 years on the family farm. While he was farming he went to work at The American Tobacco Co. where he worked for 30 years. While he was working at The American Tobacco Co, he got saved and preached for 30 years plus. He took great pride in all of his career choices. However, his most cherished accomplishment was when he gave his life to the Lord on May 9, 1966 at the home of his supervisor Jack Repass in Durham NC. Everyone that knew him saw the transformation of the man that he once was. He spent the last 58 years as a humble servant of the Lord. He was pastor at Crossroads Baptist Church (formerly known as Paschall Memorial Baptist Church) for 25 years. After a brief retirement, he felt the Lord calling him to start another church, The Lighthouse Chapel. He held services in a double wide home located on his farm for many years.
He also served in the United States Army during the Korean War. In addition, prior to coming to know the Lord he played country music on the Roxboro Radio station with the E.J. Harris Band. Also playing and singing at the American Legion Dance Hall, where he met and married his beloved wife, Frances.
Herman will be remembered for his sharp wit. He was quick to come back with a lot of one liners. Up until the day before he passed away he was still making his loved ones surrounding him laugh. He will be missed but he has fought the good fight and is now sitting at the feet of Jesus and rejoicing.
A service to celebrate his life will be held 2 PM Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at Antioch Baptist Church in Timberlake, Burial will follow in the Providence Cemetery in Roxboro. Visitation will be held prior to the service (12:30-2 PM) at Antioch Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Antioch Baptist Church building fund. The family will receive visitors at his home on Chambers Loop Rd. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Elizabeth Locklear for faithfully caring for him for the last 4 years.
