Herman Cress Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cumberland Valley Funeral Home on Feb. 27, 2026.
Herman Cress, beloved and widely known simply as "HC," passed peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Center in Hazard, Kentucky. Formerly of Speedwell, Tennessee, HC had made his home in this area in his later years, surrounded by those who loved him most. He was born to the late Vincent and Martha Griffith Cress, and lived a life that was, by every measure, rich in love, laughter, and genuine human connection.

For those who never had the privilege of knowing HC personally, know this, he was the kind of man who made the world a little warmer just by being in it. At the center of his world was his beloved wife, Effie. They were more than husband and wife; they were best friends, inseparable companions who built something beautiful together, a life rooted in devotion, shared moments, and a love that never wavered. When Effie passed on October 28, 2017, she took a piece of him with her. He never stopped carrying her in his heart.

HC retired from General Motors Corporation after many years of dedicated service, but his truest passion lived out on the water. He was a fisherman through and through, the kind who knew exactly where the fish were biting and just what bait to use. Norris and Cherokee Lakes held some of his greatest stories, tales he was always more than happy to share at length and with great pride. He owned several boats over the years, and many of those finest hours were spent on the water with Effie beside him. Beyond fishing, HC simply loved life a good conversation, a good meal, and the company of good people. He was among the friendliest souls you could ever hope to meet, with a heart of gold and a genuine willingness to help anyone in need.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Effie; his stepson, Michael Shepherd; his brothers, Gary W. Cress and Steve Cress; and his sisters, Josie Williams, Vada Winebarger, Mary Sue Smith, and Sue Shepherd.
Left to forever cherish his memory is his sister, Betty McNulty of Ypsilanti, Michigan; and his very special nephew, Gary Shawn Cress, whom HC loved like a son. Gary Shawn was a constant, caring presence in HC's life, faithfully by his side and devoted to ensuring he received the very best care as his health declined. Also left to mourn his passing are a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends whose lives are all the richer for having known him.

HC will be deeply missed, but his warmth, his stories, and his great, generous spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at noon at Whispering Pines Cemetery in Delphia, Kentucky.
