Herman Joseph Popp, Jr., 87, of Houston, Texas passed away Thursday, March 30, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Hill High, Texas on September 13, 1936 to Herman Joseph Popp, Sr. and Adela (Berger) Popp. He graduated from Schulenburg High School and moved to Houston with several of his classmates to work in Houston at Houston Lighting and Power Company. Soon after he married Georgia Marie Rainosek on August 22, 1959 and they had two daughters.
Herman was a transmission lineman and management for over 35 years with HL&P. Herman and Georgia lived in Houston while raising their two daughters. As a life-long Spring Branch resident, he was highly involved with the Knights of Columbus #4550; serving as a member, Grand Knight and member of the 4th Degree. He was a devoted member of the St. Jerome parish for over 60 years; serving as a parish council member, he assisted with counting money each week, he was a part of the men’s choir, he did electrical set ups and cooked for many church festivals, assisted with fish fries and volunteered numerous hours wherever needed. He also enjoyed supporting his hometown church picnics (High Hill and Hostyn) giving a helping hand frying chicken.
Herman enjoyed barbecuing for family, friends and fund raisers, he always looked forward to all his KC slow pitch softball games, his weekly KC bowling league and his 40+ years of hunting with his buddies in Lovelady, Texas. After retirement, he enjoyed more time in Fayette County with his cattle and farm land. He spent many years working at Oakridge Smokehouse booth during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo serving many thousands of people good food. He never met a stranger, always had a smile on his face and loved having a good time with family and friends.
He was very proud of all his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching their sports activities or listening to their many stories of hunting, fishing, college experiences and their travels. He was happy with how they all have grown up to be such wonderful adults and are doing good things in the world. He left an incredible impression on all of them that will remain with them always.

My heart goes out to the family. I grew up across the street from Herman and Georgia and I always felt that if I needed anything, I could knock on their door and ask for it. They were like family to me and I always enjoyed Herman's stories. It did not matter how long I as gone from my parent's house, any time I would return they would always wave and ask how I was doing. He was a true inspiration of how life should be lived. He will be greatly missed.
