Herta Roberta Gottschalk was born April 15, 1936 to Hugo and Auguste Zoller. She emigrated from her birth town of Vienna, Austria to the United States in 1939. She grew up in Brooklyn, NY and Kew Garden Hills in Queens and spent summers in Ridgefield, CT where she worked as a camp counselor. She attended Forest Hills High School and the Teacher's College at Oswego where she was in the women's choir, Hillel, on the student and dorm council, and a member of Alpha Epsilon. She went on to earn her Masters in Education at Columbia University. She met her husband, Ernest, at a school dance, and they were married for over 50 years. She went on to become a beloved elementary school teacher for years in White Plains, NY.

Later in life she moved to New Fairfield, CT. She made many great friends at swim aerobics, yoga, walking, and hiking. Her special moments were her views of Candlewood Lake and entertaining her friends. She loved her flowers and gardening. She traveled the world extensively in retirement and also enjoyed many wonderful times with her great friends in NYC and Naples, FL. Her greatest joys were her family, especially her four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to support Memorial Sloan Kettering's children's cancer research and programs.
