Hewitt Gauthier Obituary

Hewitt John Gauthier, Sr., passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 89 on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. He had been sick in the hospital for the past few months and decided to come home to his beloved Plaquemines Parish to enjoy the rest of his days surrounded by his loving family and friends. Hewitt was born in Buras, LA on September 26, 1934, to Blanche and Pierre John Gauthier. He has joined his siblings John Jr., Clara, Verda, Shirley, and Claire in heaven and is survived by his sister, Joan. Hewitt was a loving son and when his dad became ill, he supported his family and has continued to take care of his family all his life. There was nothing he could not do with his hands, from building a boat from scratch in the backyard to building and rebuilding our homes after too many hurricanes. He loved boats and being on the water more than anything. He trawled for many years, ran Gauthier Seafood, and owned a crew boat company and worked in the oilfield until he finally retired. Hewitt met the love of his life, Margaret Buras, and they married on July 13, 1957, and celebrated 66 loving years of marriage this year. Hewitt loved his family and often said how amazed he was at the legacy he and Margaret created, including five children, thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, namely: Hewitt Jr. (Robin), Michael, Randy (Sherri), Michelle (Mark), and Nicole (Jimmy); Jacob, Cara, Michael, Jeffrey, Ryan, Brandon, Ami, Megan, Monique, Marcus, Lauren, Trey, and Christian; Gray, Vivian, Tate, Makayla, Michael, Makynzie, Amos, Alex, Audrey, Hadley, Kensley, Karley, Noah and Evelynn. In his last days, he loved seeing all of his family together and hearing his great-grandchildren running around the house playing. We will celebrate this wonderful man's life at St. Patrick's Church at 28683 LA 23 in Port Sulphur on Friday, November 17, 2023 with visitation from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with mass and burial to follow. We would like to offer a special thanks to Compassus Hospice, especially Gail, for taking such wonderful care of him in his last days, as well as Father Gerry for his devotion. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to St. Patrick's Church.

Mr. Hewitt was one of the best men l have known. He was a good family man putting God first and family second. He was a strong patriotic American. He was always friendly and enjoyed visiting over a cup of coffee. I will miss visiting him when l go to Port Sulphur. I know he is a better place but he will be missed.
