It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hilda Shealy Umbarger, 74, of Leesville, SC. Hilda was strong, hardworking, faithful, and generous. She loved her family fiercely, and her grandchildren were the lights of her heart. She took great pride in being their beloved “Nana.”
Hilda is survived by her husband of 55 years, John W. Umbarger; daughter, Michelle U. Young (Todd); and grandchildren, Savanah and Jacob Young. She is also survived by her siblings, Phyllis Mims, Evie Shealy (Dawn), Donnie Shealy (Teresa), and Marty Shealy (Alice); and sister-in-law, Pam Shealy Kaminer. In addition, she leaves behind many nieces, nephews and extended family who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vanolen and Doris J. Shealy; brother, Sellie Ray Shealy; three nephews; and brother-in-law, Frank Mims, Sr.
The funeral service to celebrate Hilda’s life will be held at 3 o'clock on Monday, November 10th, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, Batesburg Chapel, with burial to follow in Quattlebaum Cemetery. Rev. Steven Little and Rev. Dennis Metts will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 9th, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, Batesburg Chapel, and at other times at the home of her daughter, Michelle. Active pallbearers will be: Frank Mims, Jr., Johnathan Mims, Nicholas Shealy, Sandy Shealy, Harley Shealy, Logan Shealy, and Bryson Shealy. Honorary pallbearers will be: Neal Umbarger, Brandon Umbarger, Allen Umbarger, and Travis Kyzer.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Amedisys Hospice and the staff of Lexington Medical Center for the comfort and exceptional care shown to Hilda during her final days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church, 3708 Pond Branch Road, Leesville, SC 29070.
