Hines Gibbs, Jr., the oldest of twelve was born on June 27, 1949 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Hines Gibbs, Sr. and Henrietta Pree Gibbs. Hines Jr. was baptized at an early age and later got baptized again at Greater St. Stephens where he further dedicated his life to the Lord. "Junior" as he was affectionately called, was educated in the Orleans Parish School system. He graduated in 1967 from G.W. Carver High School. After high school, he went to work at Ochsners Medical Center and attended Delgado Community College. In 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he received the National Defense Medal, the Conduct Medal, the Expert Rifle Badge and completed two USA Engineering courses in 1971. In 1972, "Junior" was honorably discharged by the U.S. Army. Upon return from military service, "Junior" began working for various oil companies throughout New Orleans. "Junior" eventually retired from the New Orleans Sewage and Water Board as an engineering inspector for 25 years. During this time he became well known to family, friends and coworkers as the "Grill Master Sergeant!" During this time, you could see him in the front yard playing his favorite songs while on the grill and inviting anyone to come get a plate. After retirement, "Junior" enjoyed his time by listening to various types of music, eating at his favorite restaurants, while believing that "you have to treat yourself, not cheat yourself!" He also enjoyed going to the casino, watching the Saints play and supporting Southern University and Mississippi State University. "Junior" left this earthly life to go be with the Lord on August 1st, 2025. He was preceded in death by Hines Gibbs, Sr.(Father), Henrietta Pree Gibbs(mother) and Dr. Tyronne Gibbs(Brother). He leaves to cherish his memory, one daughter, Jocelyn Henderson(Biloxi, MS), three grandchildren, Armani Henderson, Archie Davis and Carl Terrell. Four great grandchildren, Remi Rayne, Ramiah Terrell, Ryan Terrell and Khaden McGill. Four Brothers, Charles Gibbs, Willie (Paulette) Gibbs, Joseph (Michelle)Gibbs, Herbert Gibbs. Six sisters, Barbara (Gary)Hyatt, Ruby Gibbs, Diane Gibbs, Brenda(Fred ) Carodine, Loretta(Ricardo) Green and Bertha(Chris) Ballard. He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and great grand nephews and one god child, Metrell Cain and his favorite uncle, Theodore Sonny Reed. Friends, family, employees of Sewage and Water Board of New Orleans, Scarlet Pearl Casino of D'Iberville, MS, Beau Rivage Casino of Biloxi MS, TSX of New Orleans are invited to attend the celebration of Hines Gibbs, Jr. at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave. New Orleans, LA 70125 on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 1:00 pm. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm.
