Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kerr Brothers Funeral Home - Main St. on Jan. 20, 2025.
Homer Samuel Strader, Jr., "Sam", 84, of Lexington, Kentucky, passed away peacefully and entered his heavenly home on January 18, 2025 due to complications from Parkinson's disease.
Sam Strader, a native of Hiseville, Kentucky, was born on October 17, 1940, on a dairy farm owned and operated by his family, Strader's Dairy, Inc. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Doris Jean Strader, his daughter Amy Strader Long of Lexington (Linden), his son Dr. Bryan Philip Strader of Cincinnati (Angela). He was lovingly known as Daddy Sam to seven grandchildren. These include Blake Johnson (Megan), Hannah Allen (David), Ethan Long (Amelia), Caleb Long (Grace), Ellie Long, Grace Smith (Kevin), and Clay Strader. Additionally, he has five great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. He is also survived by a brother, Joe Bryan (Denice) Strader. Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Homer Samuel and Anna Katherine Strader, his daughter Lisa Johnson (Bryan), and his brother David Strader.
Sam's devotion was first to His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and his family. He was passionate about ministry and served in various capacities at First Alliance Church, including elder, board member, staff member, and teacher. He also served on the Alliance Development Fund advisory board for 25 years, helping to fund numerous church buildings. For 12 years, Sam enjoyed serving as the Teaching Leader for the first men's Bible Study Fellowship class in Lexington, teaching men God's word weekly. In conjunction with his ministry, Sam was a CPA and Managing Partner of the Price Waterhouse Cooper's Lexington office from 1980 to 1997. As a community leader, he served as Chairman of the Board for the Lexington Philharmonic, board member for the United Way of the Bluegrass, and member of the Lexington Rotary Club. Additionally, he was a member of the Lexington Country Club. Outside of his professional and community involvement, Sam was an avid gardener, model train enthusiast, and enjoyed playing golf and traveling. He leaves a legacy of faith and will be deeply missed by his family and community.
Visitation will be held from 3:00-7:00pm Friday, January 24 at First Alliance Church, 2201 Old Higbee Mill Road. The funeral service will be at 10:00am Saturday, January 25 at the church, burial to follow at the Lexington Cemetery. Sadly, I only knew Sam briefly through our shared association with the Bluegrass Parkinson's Alliance, but during that time I found him to be a thoughtful and considerate soul. My condolences to the family for their loss of an extraordinary gentleman.

It was an honor to get to know Sam through our common ministry in our Lexington Men's BSF class. Sam started our pilot class 35 years ago and led and taught for the first 12 years. In 2011, when I became the teaching leader for the class, Sam passed along a number of commentaries to support my preparation for teaching. Sam will be fondly remembered and deeply missed in the BSF community!

My very 1st memory of Papa Sam was when a sermon was given about racial reconciliation and Sam turned around in his seat, took my hand and looked me in my eyes and said "I´m so sorry ".
