Hong M. Quan, 80, passed away on October 3, 2025.
Born on May 18th, 1945 in B c Liêu, Vietnam, Hong was the third son of seven children born to Minh Tam Quan and Mo Trinh Tran. He founded and ran his own soy sauce business, H u Hùng Long, before marrying Thay L. Quan in 1975 and raising two sons, Thang and Khanh.
In 1978, Hong, his wife, and their sons fled Vietnam as refugees. Their small craft was attacked by pirates, who took the few belongings they carried during the voyage. They later spent a year in a refugee camp in Malaysia before settling in Roselle, New Jersey. Hong worked as a machine operator at Commerce Clearing House and later as a custodial engineer for the Westfield School District before retiring.
Hong’s love for his family was evident. As a father, he was kind and loving; as a husband, he was deeply committed to Thay for 50 years. He also shared a special bond with his dog, Cannoli, who brought him much joy and comfort.
Hong frequently visited Vietnam to help those in need and will be remembered for his generosity and the positive impact he made. He enjoyed ramen and buffets, as well as beers and fishing, and YouTube videos in his later years.
Hong is survived by his wife, Thay, their sons, Thang and Khanh, and extended family and friends.
