Horace Adolphus Blake
March 3, 1935 - October 14, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Horace Adolphus Blake, a cherished father, grandfather, esteemed professional in the aviation industry, and a beloved member of the Trinidadian community. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on March 3, 1935, Horace lived a life rich with accomplishments and adventure as the first child of Harold and Vera (Blackman) Blake. On October 14, 2024, he was surrounded by his loved ones as he took his final breath. As we bid farewell to Horace, let us celebrate the extraordinary life he lived, a life filled with wisdom, love, and resilience. His journey from his early days in Trinidad to his accomplishments in the United States and beyond speaks of a man who was deeply committed to his personal growth and the well-being of those around him. Horace began his career in Trinidad before migrating to the United States, where he earned a B.S. at Howard University in 1961 and went on to obtain a Master's degree in Industrial & Management Engineering from Columbia University in 1965. His education laid the foundation for a distinguished career as an Industrial Engineer, followed by managerial roles at TWA, Pan Am, and American Airlines. Ultimately, he joined BWIA (British West Indian Airways), where he served as Vice President of North America and the Caribbean. His leadership and vision were instrumental in expanding the airline's reach and fostering vital connections. Known for his independence and intelligence, Horace approached life with a spirit of curiosity and determination. He was passionate about travel, having experienced the Concorde Airliner and journeyed to numerous destinations worldwide with family and friends. Amid his love for adventure, he found joy in simple pleasures, such as riding his bike along the boardwalk and enjoying Sunday brunches with family. A lover of politics, finance, and history, he was also deeply dedicated to his family, affectionately known as the "Minister of Education." Also called Pops, HAB, Uncle Horace, Mr. Blake, he offered valuable advice and guidance to many, leaving a lasting impact on those he advised, whether it was a word of encouragement, a nugget of wisdom on relationships, or a piece of practical career guidance. His marriage to Grace Blake took them to many places, and they grew into a dynamic family. Even after their separation, they shared a mutual respect and friendship. Along with Grace, he leaves to mourn his sister, Vera Blake; his daughters, Shirlene and Renee Blake (son-in-law Kenneth Saunders), and son Andre Blake; and his five grandchildren, Nina Neale, Nathan Neale, Austin Blake, Miles Blake, and Lourdes Saunders-Blake. He is also survived by his niece, Veronica Blake-Sias, and his nephews, Wesley and Brian Blake, as well as many other family and friends.
We honor those who have passed before him: his father Harold, his mother Vera, and his brothers Hugo and Hayden, finding comfort in their reunion. Though we mourn his loss, we celebrate the remarkable man he was-a life that teaches us the importance of education, family, and sound advice. As we move forward, let us strive to embody the values Horace cherished: uplifting those around us and cherishing our family and friendships.
