Horace Hunter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Burroughs Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Feb. 12, 2026.
Horace Attley "Sonny" Hunter Jr., age 80, passed away on February 3, 2026, at Grand Strand Medical Center.

Born on March 12, 1945, in Florence, SC, Sonny was the son of the late Horace Attley Hunter and Cora Lesley Hunter. He attended Conway High School, where he played football and was selected to participate in the North vs. South All-Star State Game in 1963 - an achievement he remained proud of throughout his life.

Sonny went on to play football at Clemson University for two years before graduating from Mars Hill College with a degree in Mathematics. He began his professional career as a high school mathematics teacher in Dillon, South Carolina. Later, he returned to North Carolina and worked as a Plant Manager at Burlington Industries.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Sonny loved NASCAR, golf, Clemson football, and Duke basketball. He also gave back to his community as a certified high school sports referee in North Carolina, combining his love of athletics with service to others.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his sisters, Joe Watson and Anne Martin, and his brother, Tommy Hunter.

He is survived by his sister, Dancy Spivey; his brother, Terry Hunter (Gail); his children, Lisa Hunter (Ronald), Rae Hicks (Jeff), Stewart Hunter, and Holly Ricketts (Tyler); six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many friends who will miss him dearly.

A celebration of life with family and friends will be held at a later date.
