Howard A. 'Tom' Graham was embraced into the arms of Jesus on January 16, 2025, at the age of 85, in Morgantown, West Virginia. Tom was born on June 1, 1939, in Lennox, WV a son of the late Ralph and Mary Martin Graham.
Tom valiantly served his nation as a member of the U.S. Navy, finding both pride and camaraderie aboard the USS Colonial. His dedication to his country was matched only by his commitment to his community, which he affirmed by attending the naval reunion each year and traveling to all fifty states. Tom's patriotic spirit carried over into his professional life, where he first retired from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) before channeling his work ethic and expertise into his own enterprise, Graham's Heating and Cooling. Known for his generosity, he often lent his time and skills to those in need.
Central to Tom's life was his cherished family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Betty Graham, and his loving daughters, Kim Wassick and her husband Dan, Tina Keener and her husband Paul, and Amber Van Slyke and her husband JC. His legacy continues through the lives of his adored grandchildren: Danielle Layton and her husband Mike, Lauren Keener, Lexie Keener, Juliana Van Slyke, Maddox Van Slyke, and Joel Van Slyke. Tom also shared a special bond with his siblings Lavon Ringer, Connie Liston and her husband Dewayne, and Debbie Baughman and her husband Rich; and his sisters-in-law Karan Graham and Shirley Graham. Tom will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and great nephews that adored him, even though he teased them relentlessly.
Preceding him in death were his parents, as well as his siblings Doris Groves, Aleda Rush, John Graham, and Loye Graham.
A man of faith, Tom was an integral part of Sabraton Hill Baptist Church, nurturing his spiritual life with the same diligence that he did his family and work. His passion for Preston County was matched only by his love for its most famous delicacy, buckwheat cakes. His was a life of many passions, including music-a talent he exhibited while playing guitar and singing in the band White Day. An avid outdoorsman, Tom relished in hunting, fishing, and embracing nature. He also was dedicated to staying fit and active, and took great pride in the meticulous upkeep of his yard and gardens. He was a LIFELONG, avid Washington Redskin fan. He never has referred to them as the Commanders, but continued to root for them as the Redskins.
To those who knew him, Tom was a friend to everyone, a presence of kindness and reliability in the circle of his influence.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Mark Johnson and the staff at Mon Health Medical Center, nurses Nicole, John, Rikki, CAs Glen, Johnny, Alyvia, Sydney, and especially Connie, as well as front desk clerks Dani and Big Daddy, for the exceptional care, love, and support provided to Tom during his final days.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 from 4pm – 8pm, and again on Wednesday from 11am until the time of the funeral service at 12pm with Pastors Scott Whetzel and Stephen Dodrill officiating. Following the service, entombment will take place at St. Mary Peace Garden Mausoleum with military honors.
Flowers are welcome; however, donations may be made in Tom's memory to Sabraton Hill Baptist Church, New Building Project P.O. Box 1020 Dellslow, WV 26531.
