Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thomas Funeral Home - Centerville on Oct. 21, 2025.
Hubert Allen Staggs, 95, of Seymour, Iowa, passed on to his eternal home on October 19th, 2025, at Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa. Hubert was born on September 17, 1930, in
Centerville, Iowa, the son of Hubert "H.O." Oden Staggs and Garnet Charlotte Bone Staggs. He lived on his farm south of Seymour from the age of 5 months.
Hubert graduated from Seymour High School in 1948. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.
Hubert married Vivian Dold in 1949, and to this union DeLoris "Dori" and Larry Staggs were born. In 1957, he married Wanda Jordan, and they were blessed with five children, Steven "Stubby", Gary, Kevin, Shari, and Terri Staggs. In 1984, Hubert married Teresa Brummitt, gaining two loving stepchildren, Dwayne and Terry Donophan.
Hubert was a lifelong farmer, with approximately 40 years spent as a dairy farmer. He owned and operated the family "H.O. Staggs and Son Feed" business for 3 decades after his father retired. Throughout his life, Hubert gave back to his community in countless ways. At age 37, he was encouraged and inspired to get involved with the Wayne SWCD board. In 1967, he began as an assistant commissioner for two years, and was elected to the board in 1969. Hubert gave commissioner TJ Thompson credit for inspiring him to educate his fellow farmers along with the youth of our county to leave this world in better shape than when they began. He found his passion in educating youth on the importance of being responsible in caring for the land and how to protect and enhance it. He was a Wayne County Soil Commissioner for 58 years. In that role as commissioner, he took a special joy in presenting ribbons for the local Soil Conservation poster contests and handing out tree saplings to schoolchildren for Arbor Day. He was named Iowa's outstanding soil conservation district commissioner for 2020.
Hubert also served as chair for 24 years with the Soil and Water Conservation District. As a farmer, he understood the value of caring for the land. He served 23 years on the Wayne County Veterans Board, the Wayne County Farm Bureau member for 70 years, Treasurer of the Wayne Boosters, a member of the Iowa Forage & Grassland Council, Pheasants Forever, Rathbun Land & Water Alliance, Iowa Farm Bureau, a township Trustee, a member of the Iowa Veterans Affairs Board for Wayne County, and was a charter member of the Seymour High School FFA (Future Farmers of America).
Hubert's faith was a cornerstone of his life, instilled early on by his father. He cherished Scripture and sought to live out his faith in daily life. In later years, he especially enjoyed driving his red 1942 "M" Farmall tractor in local parades. His appearance in the Old Settlers Parade became a cherished family tradition and an annual reunion for the Staggs family. Above all, Hubert's greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The Staggs family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the many friends and neighbors who helped make Seymour such a special home for Hubert throughout his life.
Hubert was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa Staggs; parents, H.O. and Garnet Staggs; his son, Steven Hubert Staggs, and his wife, Kathy Staggs; his infant granddaughter Brooke Marie Staggs; his in-laws, Bob and Avis Brummitt; and brother-in-law Roger "Butch" Brummitt.
