Hugh Clark

Hugh Clark, 94, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories defined by love, hard work, adventure, and resilience.

Hugh was born on January 12, 1932, in Piqua, Ohio, to Marcus and Thelma (Stahler) Clark. He spent his early years in the small, close-knit community of Piqua before moving with his family to Elkhart, Indiana, where he would plant lifelong roots. He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1950, beginning a journey marked by determination and a strong sense of purpose.

Inspired by his brother Harold’s service in the military, Hugh enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951. He proudly served his country for eight years, until 1959. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Margaret “Marty” Burchett. Their bond was immediate and enduring, and together they built a life grounded in devotion, partnership, and joy. Hugh and Marty shared 53 wonderful years together, embracing a philosophy of “work hard, play hard” that defined their life as a couple.

In 1966, Hugh and Marty embarked on one of their many entrepreneurial adventures, opening Hugh’s Hen House, a first-of-its-kind chicken carryout that quickly became a local favorite. Known as the home of the famous “Wingdinger,” the business reflected Hugh’s creativity, determination, and willingness to take risks. This venture was just one example of his enterprising spirit and love of trying new things.

Beyond his work, Hugh lived life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He and Marty shared a passion for adventure, whether it was riding motorcycles, exploring the outdoors on snowmobiles, or traveling to new places. He embraced each day fully, finding joy in both the simple moments and the grand experiences.

Hugh’s life was one of both triumphs and challenges, successes and setbacks, but through it all, he remained steadfast, spirited, and deeply appreciative of the journey. He understood that a full life includes both highs and lows, and he faced each with courage, humor, and grace.

After 94 years, Hugh leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, love, and a life well-lived. He will be remembered for his adventurous heart, his strong work ethic, and the deep love he shared with his family and friends.

Hugh’s story is not only one of years lived, but of a life truly experienced.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings; Harold Clark, Levon Clark, and Deloris Bowers.

He is survived by his Children; Randall (Eva) Clark, Diana (Richard) Little, his siblings; Joanna Ames and Ruth VanLuven, His grandchildren; Erin (Katie) Potter, Brittany Clark, Benjamin (Emma) Clark, Breanne (Bill) Devaney, Bridgett (Riley) Jackowiak, and his great grandchildren; Lily Rene Clark-Johnson, Rhys Clark, Madison Potter, Nolan Devaney, Everly Devaney, Harlow Jackowiak, and Rhodes Jackowiak.

A Visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy., Osceola, IN 46561, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation. Internment will take place following the funeral service at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
