Hugh Fowler Obituary

Former State Senator Hugh C. Fowler, who represented Arapahoe County from 1968 - 1980, passed away October 25 in Denver. Senator Fowler also served one Regent-at-large term for the University of Colorado from 1983 - 1989. Born in Evanston, IL and a graduate of Evanston Township High School, Fowler entered the navy (V-12) at the University of Wisconsin in 1943 and transferred to the University of Colorado (BS '48) where he was commissioned in 1945 and served in the South Pacific (Guam). Fowler was recalled to active service 1951 - 1954 in Korea. As chairman of the Senate Education Committee for 10 years, he was a champion and tireless advocate for parental choice in public education. Fowler's first bill he introduced in the Senate created a partnership between Colorado and New Mexico to purchase the narrow gauge Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and saved it from extinction. In addition to reforming public schools and saving trains, Fowler was the Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 344 in Littleton and a successful business owner of Fowler & More & Company, an advertising and marketing firm in Englewood. One of Hugh's greatest joys was singing bass in the Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church choir in Englewood, where he and his wife Shirley have been members for 20 years. Hugh was genuinely adored as the patriarch of his clan and is survived by the love of his life for 74 years Shirley (Sprague), daughter Laurie Beckel (Dr. John Crawford) of Idaho Springs, Chuck Fowler (Linda Hinton) of Colorado Springs, grandchildren Yaisa (Nathan Banek) of Tirana, Albania, Nathan Beckel of Denver (Alia Haley), Emily Sheldon (David Sheldon) of Denver and five great grandchildren and brother David A. Fowler (Marilyn) of Denver. Memorial service scheduled for 11:00AM, November 10 at Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church 10150 Belleview Avenue, Englewood, CO, full military honor guard at Ft. Logan National Cemetery at 2:30PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Hugh's name to the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, 500 Terrace Ave, Chama, NM 87520 or the Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church.

I feel incredibly lucky to have crossed paths with Hugh and Parker, two of the most delightful and genuine people I've ever met. Not only did they become dear friends, they also took on the roles of mentors and business associates in my life. Their infectious energy and unwavering support have left an indelible mark on me, and I'm forever grateful for their presence in my life.

My condolences. I got to know Senator Fowler over the past several years in his capacity as a former Senator and as a Regent emeritus for the University of Colorado. I always enjoyed his calls and occasional visits to the Capitol.

I first met Hugh about 20 years ago at an event. When Laurie introduced us, she told him that I had also graduated from Evanston Township High School (ETHS). Without hesitation we both broke into the Evanston fight song! From then on, each time we saw each other we would sing together! It always made me smile and I will always remember his beautiful voice! When he was in hospice, I recorded myself singing the song and sent it to Laurie to hold up to his ear. I hope you heard me, Hugh. I will miss my fellow Evanstonian. With love, Penny Dell

Hugh Fowler was my boy scout Scoutmaster at Troop 344 in Littleton during the 1960s. He was a wonderful leader of young men; inspiring me with his Navy career and in many other ways, supporting me as I attained Eagle Scout under his leadership.
