Hugh J. O’Brien, 80, of Greenfield, passed away peacefully at home, in the loving care of his wife on September 17, 2025. He was born in Framingham, MA on August 19, 1945, the son of Hugh and Mary (Frizzell) O’Brien.

Hugh spent his early childhood in Colebrook, NH before moving to Milford, NH, where he attended local schools. In 1965 he met, and married Carol (Newhall) and they moved to Greenfield, where they have resided ever since.

Hugh worked as a machinist his entire life, having been employed with Hitchner, OK Tool, Cross and Sylvania.

He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and loved spending time outdoors. He could always be found outside mowing the lawn, cutting wood, or just sitting under the maple tree with Carol by his side. He was a proud father and grandfather.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Carol (Newhall) O’Brien, Hugh is survived by his son David and his wife Teri, four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son Michael, his grandson Patrick Lane and his half-sister Bonnie Pratt.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday September 24, 2025, at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH from 1:00pm – 3:00pm. A private graveside service will be held immediately following visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Hugh’s name to the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090.
